There is no soul that outlasts the body
“There is no soul that outlasts the body”

Some people, also known as dualists, disagree with this statement, as they believe in the existence of soul in human beings. NDE is one their main arguments. They claim that NDEs show there must be a part of us that can exist without our bodies, because a patient once heard the conversation of the surgeons during her operation of the brain where her senses should be numb. This also proves that the soul is free from the body. Moreover, some dualists feel like there is something which is in charge of their body, however, separate to it and human beings are not simply a physical body. Also, they think the soul is what makes human unique and different to animals. Without that, humans are nothing special.

On the other hand, some people, also known as materialists, agree with the statement for they believe in no soul and we are only made of our body. One for their main arguments is that there is no scientific proof for the existence of soul as science says that people are just composed of DNA, and the soul is only used to explain what we may not yet understand, e. g. NDEs, thinking etc. Moreover, the soul leaves more questions than answers, for example, where does the soul come from? Some materialists even claim that people want to believe in a soul because they are afraid of death, because if humans have a soul, it will live on forever even when the body is dead.

In conclusion, I agree with the statement, because we can’t see the soul and there is no proof of its existence. Also, I think NDEs are just scientific phenomenon that we not yet know about, and DNA and electric impulses in our mind control our body, but not souls. Moreover, soul is more a religious idea than a scientific idea, and I think science is more reliable. Therefore, I don’t think we have a soul.

According to Julien Musolino, a cognitive scientist, the current scientific consensus denies any view of a soul or spirit as being separate from the brain. For the naturalist, which are individuals that subscribe to the philosophy that all of our credible science and understanding of the world is based on physical reality, there really is no reason to bring in fanciful notions like the soul into play. This concept of the soul can just be referred to as the mind and just because we do not fully understand it, it does not mean individuals should just use superstition to fill the void for lack of information on the subject. However, there are more arguments that support my…

For example, the mind provides functions such as thinking, doubting, hating, or desiring. In contrast, the body or brain are mere physical extensions, and simply represent how a person is shaped or the color of their skin. The body and brain do not provide contributions to the mental functioning of a being, and simply provide a physical platform under which the mental, and its own capacities of thought and contemplation, may be housed. As an extension, all things in the universe may be qualified as a body, a physical entity, or a mind, a thinking entity. Additionally, a mind does not need a body to provide it shelter, and regardless of ever having a body, a mind will exist for eternity because it lacks the characteristics of a physical entity, which cause it to degenerate. In conclusion, Substance Dualists perceive the mind and body as separate and distinct substances due to their unique abilities and…

These larger questions of the soul and the mind and their existence beyond human death has been debated and explored throughout time. Yet, we lack hard evidence to support the idea of the existence of the soul and its continued ‘life’ beyond the death of the body. Individuals have not returned from the grave to transmit this knowledge in any manner that can be tested, studied, and deemed true. What a soul is and why we have it is unique to the human experience. The Abrahamic traditions defines the soul as the “I” that lives within our body and acts through it. The soul is what makes each individual unique according to theologian Thomas Aquinas. Noted philosophers Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle, all argued that the psyche or, the soul, was the “crown of the logical facilities”. Yet the mind is responsible for processing our human experiences and storing them as learned experiences that shape and mold our continued existence.…

Lucretius states that the soul is comprised of four distinct types of atoms: breath, heat, air, and an unnamed fourth, that is more mobile than the other three (3.231). Because these senses may occur at any point on the surface of or inside of the body, it may be argued that the soul must be spread evenly throughout the physical body. Atomism says that no atoms are ever created or destroyed, but rather disassemble and move on to other organisms after the host dies. It can be assumed that the soul undergoes the same process. By stating “that what existed before has perished and what exists now was created now” (3.676), Lucretius justifies that the soul as a unit is as impermanent as the body and after death, both will dissolve into individual atoms.…

By simply observing the title we can infer that the soul never dies. The soul separates what is living and what is not living. The things that are able to do things on their own are called “alive, besouled and/or animated”. These things are distinguished from the things that are inanimate, such as rocks. The rock cannot act on its own which shows its lack of soul. The understanding of what is alive and what is not is seen everyday of our lives so we don’t spend much time thinking on it. Even young children know the difference between a real bear or a toy bear. The early man thought that things were alive because of the lack of information about the subject. He saw that water and fire was animated so he thought these things were alive. The soul is an integral part of the whole, united with other parts to form one being. “If the soul were a separate being added onto the body of an organism making it alive, the organism would not be one thing but two things combined together.” In a substantial change something stays and something changes. When people die the corpse has a new form, and does not have the old form (which is what made it alive) but the soul remains. A physical human body can be broken down into a corpse because of its physical composition but because the soul does not have a physical structure it can not break down. “Since the subsistence soul can neither decompose in itself nor cease to exist because of the corruption or decomposition of something else, and since these are the only ways in which something might cease to be, the soul cannot stop being.” So through this we understand that the soul is always…

Nagel wrote: “everybody dies, but not everybody agrees about what death is.” In this chapter, Death, Nagel explains some of the beliefs people have about death. One of his points was survival after death. Nagel said that if dualism is true we can understand how life after death might be possible. Each person would consist of a soul and a body, and the soul would have to be able to leave the body and function on its own. If dualism is not true, then life after death could not exist because mental processes go in the brain which depend on the rest of the body. Nagel believes that life after death might be tangible if dualism is true.…

The mind, or ‘soul’ as it has come to be known to some, is classified as a ‘non-physical entity’ that is separate from the brain by Cartesian Dualists and linked to (but still different from) the brain by Property Dualists. These are perfectly reasonable ways to look at it as such concepts as qualia and privileged access and the fact that mental phenomena lack spatial features support these theories. While Materialists may doggedly reject Dualism, it can be noted that some of their arguments are by no means iron-clad, including their trump card, the ‘interaction problem’. Also, Materialistic arguments fail to address and explain our mental experiences taking…

Unlike the body, the soul we are unable to see, touch, smell and so forth. Since we are unable to see and experience the soul physically, the soul does not change because it is not a physical material part of the body. The only issue is that there is no way to monitor if the soul does or does not change throughout life. As we physically change our appearance and experience the different experiences in life, we are unable to see our soul. How, if possible, does it change? What can change our soul? Since we are not being able to determine the answer to these questions, it is best to say that our soul does not change based on physical changes.…

Metaphysics is a vast subject to speak on. With that being said, you will have so many different opinions. Like myself I believe in a soul. I believe in God, sometimes when I go through bad situations, I may pray and ask, “Is my life determined by fate? Is what I am going through right now real?” Also, seeing that I believe in a soul, one might question how does the soul live outside the body? Or is there even a such thing as a soul? To me a soul is real, as far as if it lives outside the body I could not answer that question. Maybe once you pass away it lives outside the body. Some believe that a soul is only just ruling a human body. I believe it is just something we may never discover.…

Firstly, Plato believed in disembodied existence after death as he claimed that the soul and body were separate and that the soul was in the realm of the Forms and then was incarnated in the body. He also said that in the future, the soul will be freed from the body and will be reincarnated into another body or eventually return to the realm of the forms. Furthermore, Lewis, Descartes and Swinburne are also dualists and they argued that we exist beyond death as well. H.D. Lewis argued that we detect mental processes quite distinct from physical ones, suggesting a non-physical self and Richard Swinburne argued that people could conceivably not be limited to using a chunk of matter for perception, knowledge and control. Moreover, Descartes argued that the body is divisible (eg parts can be severed), but the mind is not and hence argued that we conceive ourselves as separate from the body.…
