The Day that Changed Everything “I’ve dealt with my ghosts and I’ve faced all my demons… finally content with the past I regret ...” ‘I’m Movin’ On’ by Rascal Flatts would be the last song I would hear before my career changed forever. I was Sergeant Eli Horne with Engine Company 10, Ladder 10. I woke up every day to do the job I wanted. Ever since I was a little boy, I wanted to be a firefighter. My dad was a firefighter and he was preceded by my grandfather. It was 5:45 am and it was yet again time begin my day as an “an everyday hero” as my ex-wife had called me. I never would have guessed that at the same time I woke up, terrorists were passing through airport security to antagonize our American dream (Archetype 1). Rufo was biting at the bit, as always, to be let outside to chase the squirrels and creatures still awoken from the night before. As I reached for the door handle, he lunged onto me and began licking my face intrusively. A little too much slobber for my liking, but hey, I couldn’t complain. At least someone still loved me.
