blank page or I think about the problem in my head. I believe that writing will help me think better once I have written the words or expressions in the journal. This chapter was very helpful for me because it gives several hints that you can to better yourself as a thinker. Such as, slowing down a little when solving the problem, analyzing your ideas, and then decode later on what it is you were trying to do.
“Relax, accept it and enjoy it, for it is a great opportunity to learn.” (Mason, Burton and Stacey, 2010, P.56 ).
I never thought of being stuck as a great learning opportunity. I often find being stuck is quite a nuisance, but I can see why it can be great learning opportunity as long as you have a positive outlook. Attitude plays a big role for success and I know it’s something that I need to work on in this class. I was always good at math and I find these problems very difficult, so it’s often very frustrating for me. I know I will have future students who are exactly like me, so it’s important for me teach my students that its okay to get stuck and get frustrated. But you can only be frustrated for a little while, because after that, it’s time to put your thinking cap back on. It’s also important for my students to know the difference between specializing and generalizing. When students specialize they are in the entry and beginning of the attack phase. Specializing allows students to figure out what they want to know when solving problems. Generalizing is apart of the attack and review phase. The attack phase allows students to rotate in between stuck and aha moments. The review phase allows students to check, reflect, and extend their work and
thinking.
Overall, this chapter was very eye opening for me, especially when it discussed how you can tell that students are stuck. Being stuck on a problem is a lot more positive for students and myself. We need to learn and reflect upon why we are stuck and what we can do to try new methods. Also, I learned that I should be writing a lot more in journal because it will only benefit my thinking process later on.
