Human Services Needs Assessment Paper
The selected group needing human services is children in need. This selected group is important because if children aren’t serviced when they are children, they will become adults who need services. If human service professionals can break the cycle early in childhood there will be less of a chance that they need additional services. This selected group is also very important because children in need cannot help themselves. Adults can make choices to try to fix their situation. Children follow adults lead so they only know what they are taught, what they see, and what their parents do and if the adult …show more content…
is displaying the problems of poverty for example that is all the children are going to know.
Children in need have not developed fully to deal with stresses in life.
Chapter two of (“Human Services in Contemporary America”, 2011) explains that the conditions and problems that children in need are facing, but not limited to, are physical and emotional problems, lack of understanding, rejection, illnesses, and poverty, children in single family homes, and abused and neglected children. There are many more factors that children in need face. Poverty and children living in single parent homes seems to be the most challenging with trying to take care of children. Povertyusa.org lists the statistics on poverty in the United States that 1.6 million children stayed in a shelter or emergency housing last year. Also, 1 in 6 Americans live in poverty. Statistics also states that 1 in 7 American households were food insecure last year. There …show more content…
are 46. 2 million population in poverty in the United States. (“Poverty USA”, 2012) A disadvantage of children living in a single parent home is the greater chance of children living in poverty. Mother only families have very high rates of poverty. Father only families do not seem as effected as mothers. Father’s financial stability is usually significantly higher than the mother in most cases. Some problems that children in a single parent home may face are drug use, youth suicide, violence, mental illness, and poor school performance. This population is very likely to be in need of help from human services agencies. There are some community agencies such as child guidance centers that offer individual or family therapy with a social worker, psychologist, or psychiatrist. There are also a great number of services that are available to these children and their families. (“Human Services in Contemporary”, 2011)
Chapter two of (“Human Services in Contemporary”, 2011) gives a list of services that meets human services.
There are community centers, daytime care programs, programs for teenage mothers, parent-assistance programs, family crisis intervention programs, and socially supportive organizations. Every state has a human services department that has a child and family services department to help the children’s needs. Every state also has a Child Protective Services (CPS) department to help meet children’s needs. There are also adoption and foster care programs that help meet children in need as well. (“Family, Youth, & Children’s Services, 2011) There is a special program called “savethechildren.org”, which allows people to become sponsors to help with children in need. People can just donate on the website as well in they don’t want to commit enough to be a
sponsor.
These organizations definitely meet the need of children. They may not meet all the needs right away but they do their best to meet their needs and the needs of the family. The human services department help children and families with each individual situation if they qualify for help. Child and family services deal with food stamps, housing, cash assistance, WIC, etc. to help with their situations. Unfortunately, you have to apply and get approved for the services. They do not service every single family. They only service qualifying families. To qualify you can only make a certain percentage of income or go to school full time while being a mother. Child Protective Services is an organization who protect children from child abuse and neglect. These services also have resources to help parents through their situations if they can. More services should be exposed to help families with their situations. Every state does not have all services but finding the resources in the specific state is a great start to meet needs.
