DATE: March 8, 2013
TO: UWSP SBE Students
FROM: David R. Barth, UWSP SBE Major
SUBJECT: How to Excel at BUS 360: Simple Steps to Yield Big Results

The purpose of this memo is to inform you how to excel at BUS 360. Bus 360 is very difficult. I implemented the following techniques and credit them as contributing factors to my success. If you practice preparation, execution, and control, you will also succeed.

Preparation - actions prior to class
The key to any plan of action is in the preparation. The devil is in the details. Initiate the following action steps:

Organize yourself by purchasing a durable 2” binder, tabbed dividers, pocket folders, and document protectors.
1. Print reading guides, power points, and sample problem sets.
2. Read assigned chapters focusing your efforts on new concepts, terminology, and equations.
3. Take care of yourself.
1. Eat plenty of fruits and vegetables and drink water. There is a direct correlation between what you eat and drink and your achievement in class.
2. Strive for 7-8 hours of sleep per night; well rested brains will retain more information.
Execution - actions during class
You have prepared extensively, but you will need to implement the following action steps:

1. Attend every scheduled class period, course material builds upon prior concepts.
2. Sit near the front of the class.
1. Allows easier viewing of board/screen.
3. Actively participate.
1. Answer questions, ask questions, and contribute to class discussions.
Control Measure - actions after class
Effectively completing a plan cannot be accomplished without follow through. Complete your plan by implementing the following action steps:

1. Review lecture notes as soon as possible.
1. Fill in any missing portions.
2. Complete all end-of-chapter problems and homework, assigned and unassigned.
1. E-mail Professor Leschke with questions.
2. Submit either through D2L or in class.
3. Seek additional help.
1. Join a study group.

Week two gave us an inside look on what the six steps are during the planning process. These steps are situational analysis, alternative goals and plans, goal and plan evaluation, goal and plan selection, implementation, and finally monitor and control. The step that Tina, Joanne, and Chris thought was most important in the planning process was the role of setting up alternative goals and plans. They believe it is always a good idea to have an alternative plan just in case the original plan did not achieve the intended goal. We all were able to agree that having a backup plan was a great way of running a business.…

Page 50 1a. According to Cooper and Schindler (2011) “Ethics are norms or standards of behavior that guide moral choices about our behavior and our relationships with others (p.32). The manager of market intelligence of AutoCorp had to make an ethical decision when she found a competitor’s confidential –restricted circulation crammed into a tiny space on her flight. The most prudent decisions the manager has to make about her responsibilities to herself and others are the ethical standards and behaviors of how the decision can affect her, the business and competitor. Cooper and Schindler (2011) stated “Unethical activities are pervasive and include violating nondisclosure agreements, breaking participant confidentiality, misrepresenting results, deceiving people, using invoicing irregularities, avoiding legal liability, and more (p. 32). So the manager has to decide if she will falsify the documents or hold up her ethical standards and provide the report she originally completed.…

This process was overwhelming but it helped me to see that there is a solution to all problem’s in life. Problems are opportunities to make some good things happen. It's hard to assign a value for any problem, because for each situation, one of the criteria may strongly outweigh the others. Planning lets you be sure you have taken care of all of the details. Planning helps you save time, energy, and resources in the long run. Even if there are some unwanted results, you may well decide that the benefits outweigh the negatives. As when you're taking medication, you'll put up with the side effects to cure the disease. But be sure you go into the process with your eyes open to the real costs of solving the problem at hand.…

To make an effective plan you must first analyze the situation at hand. When you analyze the situation, you look at the advantages/strengths, disadvantages/weaknesses, the opportunities/benefits you will gain from it, and the threats/downfalls in it. Every plan needs to be effectively analyzed. Every aspect of your plan should be looked at in detail and from there you can decide if your plan will ensure success or failure. Everything you do should have a plan of some sort. Things like going to the movies even need a plan. You have to decide where you going, what time, with whom, if you are buying food, what you are going to buy, etc. Planning would have made your experience at the movies a more enjoyable one now.…
