In the midst of England’s colonization there were five colonies that excelled in exporting profitable crops. The colonies included Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia. Of these colonies North Carolina was the weakest. One of the reasons being that the people of North Carolina had a strong resistance to authority. As stated earlier North Carolina had been one of the colonies that had a strong resistance to authority. This may have been one of the main reasons why they were not as successful as their neighboring colonies. Before they were separated they were looked down on by their neighbors, and were probably perceived as savages. All of the other plantation colonies were aristocratic so this would only lead me to believe that maybe if North Carolina had ruled with an iron fist than maybe they would have been more successful. Another reason may have been the fact that North Carolina did not have as many slaves like the rest of the other plantation colonies. North Carolina seemed to be a place where anyone could just come to plant their crops and the people who did plant their crops had few or no slaves. This meaning that the less slaves you have the less money you make. So I guess you could say that this would be one of the reasons why other North Carolina was somewhat looked down on by other southern colonies. At this point in time the South was very strict about power and North Carolina being as lenient as they were kind of made them a black sheep. In
