The quest for clean water has become a life or death ordeal in the Philippines after Typhoon Haiyan 's massive storm surge and quick action needs to be taken to prevent further disease and dehydration. Our proposal is that we should help provide the villagers with the installation of ram pumps, villages will benefit in creating a more accessible water system and a healthier environment. The ram pumps will provide clean water to save people from waterborne diseases such as dysentery, cholera and typhoid fever.
After Typhoon Haiyan had decimated the philippines, “Philippine officials were quickly working to install massive, 20,000-gallon water tanks in three central locations where it can be chlorinated and sent through local pipes for public use. Notably has these water tanks has the capability of purifying 400,000 gallons of water a day (Fox News 2013).”
. This is influential to my project because these water tanks are meant for big cities as opposed to the small villages miles away. By providing ramp pumps to the villages, villagers don’t have to travel such a distance just for clean water. Also, “The Stop Hunger Now Organization has donated 1,100 Water Filters donated to victims of Typhoon Haiyan. The Sawyer filter uses kidney dialysis technology to purify water to 99.99%. It is capable of supplying 295 gallons of water per day, enough water for up to 250 people (Stophungernow.org 2013).” The first thought that came to my mind was water filters are temporary, the ramp pump is the solution for the long haul. Water filters last up days with a certain amount of uses before its useless but a ramp pump could last years with proper maintenance.
Currently, women and children are having to walk down steep and dangerous hillsides in order to collect water. This task has significantly reduced the villager 's standard of living. The ram pump is the solution to deliver water to these villages, it will allow for the
