In The Time Of The Butterflies By Julia Alvarez
My Essay is a time capsule that was designed to show what Dede finds important in In the Time of the Butterflies by Julia Alvarez. It specifically focuses on how she can move past her fears, doubts, and feelings of responsibility to find courage. With this newfound power, she is able to fight for something that is important to her. Even in Dedes’ childhood, she was always a very sensible person who thought through what she does, relying on reason rather than using some courage to make important decisions. We watch her family talk about each sister saying that “‘[Dede will] bury us all’, her father adds, laughing ‘in silk and pearls’ ” (Alvarez 8). When discussing each sister, we hear about how all of her siblings have dynamic traits that will …show more content…
something is missing now. [she realized] --- it’s me, Dede the one who survived to tell the story” (Alverez 321). Dede compares her lost family to statues; this comparison is made to show how what happened cannot be changed much like how once status is formed it is not easily changed. Both the Mirabal sisters and statues are locked in place. People are able to observe both cases and learn about the history of the subject without directly talking or experiencing what the subject went through. It is easy to argue that the biggest example of courage is fighting past fears and doubts to take action anyway. Dede is a prime example of how she was faced with the guilt of being the only survivor, but still woke up each day to keep her sisters’ story alive. For my visual element, I tried to incorporate Dedes’s traits as well as attention to detail, revolving around how the Dominican Republic was at the time. On the outside of the time capsule, the flowers are in the colors of the Dominican Republic and are not super overwhelming. I went for this because of Dedes’s timidness and logic in the beginning of the story, some flowers are smaller and still blossoming which in my mind is similar to the trait of

    1. It was difficult to find out who was the narrator of In The Time Of The Butterflies was, seeing as how the book kept switching from the viewpoints of each of the Mirabal sisters. Although the Mirabal sisters spoke firsthand of what happened, it seemed as if we were being told how they felt, but not from the directly from the sister. Finally, I thought back to the very beginning of the story and realized that the narrator of the book was the reporter who went to Dede's house, which happens annually on November 25th. Through Dede, the reporter was an outsider who could tell the readers what happened, the sister's feelings and thoughts, and still talk about the story without speaking in the first person. When Dede invited the reporter in her house, the reporter walked the hallways of the house and observed the portraits on the walls. This was from an outsiders point of view, Dede wouldn't have noted certain characteristics of her own house. I believe the reporter is the narrator of In The…

Dedé, one of the sisters, constantly has her voice and opinions suppressed; she is talking to her sisters when they ask her to make a decision and act on it; “What could Dedé say? She had to talk to Jaimito first. Patria had given her a disappointed look... ‘But can’t you decide on your own, then tell him?’ Dedé stared at her sister, disbelieving” (Alvarez 176). Patria asks, in this quote, if Dedé can decide for herself. Had Dedé felt free to make her own decisions, she would have responded accordingly by giving them a yes or a no as her final answer. Instead, she cannot believe that her sister would ask her to make a decision without Jaimito, and tells them that she must talk to him first. However later, when she ends up talking to him, “Dedé had talked to Jaimito...he was furious with her even considering such a request” (Alvarez 176), he simply forces her to go along with his decision. This exemplifies how Dedé’s ability to make her own decisions has been limited due to her relationship with…

Rafael Trujillo was a Dominican Republic dictator who was in power for roughly 31 years. “The 24th of October in 1891 God's glory made flesh in a miracle. Rafael Leonidas Trujillo has been born” (Alvarez 24). People within the Dominican Republic eventually did start to realize what impact his actions had on people, directly and indirectly. His impact on people as a leader are brought our in Julia Alvarez's novel, In the Time of the Butterflies. “You still don’t get it? Minerva don’t you see? Trujillo is having everyone killed” (Alvarez 78). Trujillo was also had an international impact, which was not always a peaceful matter. “El Jefe cannot afford any more international trouble right now” (Alvarez 244). Trujillo caused trouble through all of his actions, which will never be forgotten even after his death in 1961 on May 30th. Kim Jong Un, South Korea's current dictator shares many similarities and differences with Trujillo. Kim Jong Un was born in 1984 on January 8th. First, “The Literature of Americans,” Kimberly Koza writes: “By discovering the Literature of our neighbors, we may also learn about ourself.” The story I chose was The Day of the Butterfly by Alice Munro. The theme of The Day of the Butterfly varies resulting in a theme from the story; include the realization that the theme relates to our common desire and struggle to belong—to have a friend—and the cruel consequences for those who become outsiders. Additionally, the story Day of the Butterfly is about a sixth-grade girls Myra Sayla who is an immigrant, and responsible for her little brother, Helen a friend of Myra gives her a tin butterfly from a Cracker Jack box. Daring to reach out to Myra makes Helen feel both self-congratulatory and…

Change in the Environment It’s amazing to see how the environment has changed over time. Ecocriticism is a study of literature and the environment from an interdisciplinary point of view, where literature scholars analyze texts that illustrate environmental concerns and examine the various ways literature treats the subject of nature. Ecocriticism is important because it is showing people the relationship between literature and nature and how the behaviors of people effect the environment. Authors write with negative points, positive points, and fiction stories to influence their readers and persuade them to change their behavior towards the environment.…
