In The Time Of The Butterflies By Julia Alvarez
By believing in the revolution, Minerva is impacted by having rules of what won't get her in trouble by the overly powerful government, and because of this she does many things to speak against Trujillo and the others. In “In the Time of the Butterflies”, the entire Mirabal family, and especially Minerva, realize how corrupt their government, and especially the leader of their government, Trujillo is. Once they realize this, they speak out about these injustices, and even start their own group to help the revolution. In this portion of the book, the Mirabal family is at a dinner party hosted by Trujillo. He insisted that Minerva attend. He usually goes for young girls, and uses his power to get them. He starts to dance with Minerva and takes …show more content…
I push just a little against him so he’ll loosen his hold, but he pulls me tighter towards him” (Alvarez 100). This shows that whether a girl, like Minerva, wants to have a relationship with him or not, he still does whatever in his power to make it happen. He used his power by making her go to his party, because she knew that if she didn't show up, there would be a consequence. She also knew that if she didn't dance with him, she would be in trouble. She reacted to him pressing against her by pushing away, and when that was not enough she took the courage to publicly slap him. Secondly, Trujillo’s power can go so far as to tell people what they can or can't do, and even when they can leave certain places. After Minerva's encounter with Trujillo at his party, the family all decided to leave. They were scared to leave, but had to because they felt very uncomfortable. The next day, the Governor shows up at their house. Minerva then says “Governor de la Maza is now returning from the …show more content…
He doesn't want the best for her, he just wants to get what he pleases. During this time, Minerva had to go to Trujillo’s office and apologize to him for the stunt they pulled off by leaving early. She ended up saying that she still wants him to fulfill her dream of going to law school. She had also noticed before that he had a pair of weighted dice on his desk. Stated next, “His gaze falls on the dice. Slowly, his lips twist in a wily smile. “I'll tell you what." I’ll let you toss in the privilege. You win, you get your wish. I win, I get mine.” I can guess what he wants. But I'm so sure I can beat him now that I know his secret”(Alvarez 115). Minerva rolls doubles, and Trujillo realizes that those are his weighted dice, so he uses them too, and also rolls doubles. Trujillo knew that no matter what dice she took, he would either lose or they would tie. He also knew she had no choice. She had to roll since she would be scared to deny his rules. If she denied taking this chance, she would likely have consequences. He would force her to roll, in hopes of winning what he wanted. For him, it was all about using his power to get his way. Minerva ended up agreeing to the

Minerva says to her mother, “I’d just left a small cage to go into a bigger one, the size of our whole country” (Alvarez 19). Her whole life she has not thought anything of women not having a voice in the government, but Minerva turns herself around and discovers her strength to change that. Although Minerva fears Trujillo, she does not show it towards him. When the Mirabal family receives an invitation to Trujillo’s party, they are shocked to see that he would especially like to see Minerva present. Dedé’s life growing up was very similar to Alvarez’s life. Alvarez wrote, “They’re all there, mamá, Papá, Patria-Minerva-Dedé. Bang-bang-bang, their father likes to joke, aiming a finger pistol at each one, as if he were shooting them, not boasting about having sired them. Three girls, each born within a year of each other! And then, nine years later, María Teresa, his final desperate attempt at a boy misfiring.” (Alvarez 8) Dedé was the second of four girls, just like Alvarez. The families in the book were also large and very close knit. One example is, “The days started to fill, Nelson was born, and two years later, Noris, and soon I had a third belly growing larger each day. They say around here that bellies stir up certain craving or aversions. Well, the first two bellies were simple, all I craved were certain foods, but this belly had me worrying all the time about my sister Minerva.” (51) The family life experiences of Alvarez showed up in this part of the book when Patria was talking about her family and how big it was getting. The roles of the women also show up in Alvarez’s writing. She wrote, “I moved back home with the children in early August, resuming my duties, putting on a good face over a sore heart, hiding the sun-as the people around here say-with a finger. And slowly, I began coming back from the dead. What brought me back? It wasn’t God, no señor.…

    1. It was difficult to find out who was the narrator of In The Time Of The Butterflies was, seeing as how the book kept switching from the viewpoints of each of the Mirabal sisters. Although the Mirabal sisters spoke firsthand of what happened, it seemed as if we were being told how they felt, but not from the directly from the sister. Finally, I thought back to the very beginning of the story and realized that the narrator of the book was the reporter who went to Dede's house, which happens annually on November 25th. Through Dede, the reporter was an outsider who could tell the readers what happened, the sister's feelings and thoughts, and still talk about the story without speaking in the first person. When Dede invited the reporter in her house, the reporter walked the hallways of the house and observed the portraits on the walls. This was from an outsiders point of view, Dede wouldn't have noted certain characteristics of her own house. I believe the reporter is the narrator of In The…

The book is set in the Dominican Republic, where an oppressive dictator named Trujillo is in power. Living under his iron fist is the Mirabal family, a relatively normal family with four beautiful daughters. While the girls are protected relatively well from Trujillo’s political patriarchy, a few of them are introduced to patriarchy via minor oppression through the church. However, as they grow older, the Mirabal sisters cannot be so easily protected, and they see how unbearably oppressive Trujillo really is, and eventually each one decides to help fuel a rebellion against him. However, the Mirabal sisters are not just being oppressed by Trujillo; they are also being oppressed by the men in their families.…

Trujillo employed this method against people whom he believed had wronged him or to impede their efforts of defeating his government. The author demonstrates this through the unfortunate series of events experienced by the Mirabal family. For instance, after the incident where Minerva rejected Trujillo's improper advances by slapping him, her father is "sent to the capital for questioning," but in reality it was more than a matter of questioning. Minerva's father was subject to extreme torture as punishment for his daughter's audaucity, and it was later discovered that "he has gone mad" due to his imprisonment. Furthermore, the three Mirabal sisters exposed themselves and their family to greater danger as they commenced with their political activity. They were being constantly spied on, received numerous threats, and were eventually imprisoned. Likewise, other individuals were suppressed by the SIM. Trujillo himself has implied the use of cruel tactics to silence educators of communism or politics that contradicted his own, when he quotes "but we've been teaching those teachers their lessons all…

something is missing now. [she realized] --- it’s me, Dede the one who survived to tell the story” (Alverez 321). Dede compares her lost family to statues; this comparison is made to show how what happened cannot be changed much like how once status is formed it is not easily changed. Both the Mirabal sisters and statues are locked in place. People are able to observe both cases and learn about the history of the subject without directly talking or experiencing what the subject went through.…

“It’s better to have a short life that is full of what you like doing, than a long life spent in a miserable way”, a quote by Alan Watts, alludes to the sacrifices, risks, and traumatic paths of life the three Mirabal sisters experienced throughout their short lifetime, as well as what they have stood by, such as education and their own persona. In the walks of life, many people have impacted society and created a permanent stamp for themselves. Many inspirational figures have dedicated their lives to receive the proper power or respect they think they deserve, even in which, would cost them their lives.
