Answer: Property and casualty insurance protects property (houses, cars, boats, and so on) against losses due to accidents, fire, disasters, and other calamities. Property and casualty policies tend to be short-term contracts and, that’s why the subject to frequent renewal is, and one more characteristic feature is the absence of savings component. Property and casualty premiums are based on the probability of sustaining the loss. To estimate the key determinant of the price of an insurance policy, i.e. risks, insurance companies take third-party proceedings that develop models of catastrophe loss probabilities. Based on the numbers form Exhibit 5 of the case we see that according to AIR Worldwide which provides information on the loss probability that Insured Loss if the listed Hurricanes Recurred in 2006 is 151.2% more than the case writer estimates of Actual Reported Damage in 2006. As you see from the table below differences in monetary terms and percentage change between these two different sources are huge except those figures with minus sign. So, we can say that prices are not fixed and depend on the third-party vendors’ probability calculations which are much higher than actual estimates suggested by casewiters. Consequently, the profits of property and casualty insurance companies can be high.…

    National Flood Insurance

Over 5 million people spread across 20,200 communities hold a flood insurance plan. In the year 2005 the National Flood Insurance Plan (NFIP) had paid out close to 16 billion. The premiums paid by the 5 million have only surmounted to 2 billion, therefore the NFIP has the ability to reach out to the US Treasury. With the US Treasury enabling the NFIP to meet its financial obligations, the financial obligations are becoming the obligation of the taxpayers (GAO, 2005) (Wells, 2005). The goals of the NFIP are “to provide property flood insurance coverage for a high proportion of property owners who would benefit from such coverage, through this insurance coverage reducing taxpayer funded disaster assistance when flooding strikes and reducing flood damage through flood plain management and the enforcement of building standards (such as elevating structures)” (GAO, 2005).…

Manzana Insurance was founded in Sebastapol, California in 1902. It originally specialized in orchard and farm insurance. In 1906, after the San Francisco Fire, it saw an opportunity and expanded into a number of areas. The main lines of business initially were Commercial property insurance only. Then Manzana dabbled into commercial liability segment which contributed to almost 50% of revenues. But after the liability crisis and its takeover the strategy adopted was a back to basic strategy whereby there was a conscious effort to reduce the revenue contribution from liabilities. This went down to 20% in 1991. During this time frame the competition from other insurance companies especially from Golden Gate, had become intense.…

Summary Now that the worst of the economic crisis is over, the balance can be made up for Peru as well. GDP growth will fall to 1% in 2009, a steep drop from the 9.8% registered in 2008. However, in comparison to its peers, this can be considered a good result. Monetary and fiscal stimuli have supported growth so far. However, with regard to the fiscal stimulus, the bottom of the treasury chest is in sight. On the back of higher spending and falling revenues, the budget deficit will deteriorate sharply to -3.4% of GDP this year. Inflation, however, is not a concern at this time, as the contraction of domestic demand and investment will drive down inflation to 3.2% by the end of this year. However, Peru continues to face structural impediments to growth. Exports are recovering, with demand from Asia being an important driver, but remain hinged on primary exports. As exports are growing more rapidly than imports, the current account will improve to a deficit of 0.6% of GDP. The downside is that the currency will appreciate as a result. This hurts trade and hampers the recovery. With regard to its external solvency, Peru is in a good position. Foreign debt is low and the level of FX-reserves is still high at USD 28bn. On the political front, President Alan García is losing popularity and authority on the back of the continuing social opposition by part of the population. His approval rating has dropped to 20% and it will be a difficult task to regain popularity before the 2011 elections. A rapid economic recovery would make this task easier. Insurance Regulation in the Commonwealth Caribbean has emerged from custom, based on the principles and policies of the English Common Law. Insurance allows for the protection of an event or thing against risk of loss or damage, by another party, such as an insurance company, which agrees to compensate its equivalent in occurrence of the event. The importance and relevance of its regulation, sourced in legislation, judicial decisions, and regulations issued by insurance commissions, are clearly shown in the protection of policyholders through provisions to maintain insurer solvency and the enforcement of sanctions in breach of these provisions.…

Billions are spent each year around the globe on reinsurance policies to ensure stability throughout the insurance marketplace. Similar to the operations of people and businesses insuring their own personal risk, insurance companies use reinsurance to transfer their respective risks. The first real signs of the reinsurance market was back in 1370, when an underwriter named Guilano Grillo contracted with Goffredo Bonaira and Martino Sacco to reinsure a ship on part of the voyage from Genoa to the harbour of Bruges (Kopf 1929). Since this quote, there have been unprecedented developments in the Reinsurance market. Nowadays, ‘’Reinsurance is a global business, covering risks from insurers in many geographic locations (Holzheu and Lechner 2007). There are many major international players within this particular volatile sector. Munich Reinsurance Company, Swiss Re Company Limited and Lloyd’s were ranked in the top five reinsurers based on gross premiums written for 2011 (Mcmahon 2012).…
