Some philosophers looked at the organization of government. The authors of the independence documents looked at the views of philosophers like John Locke, who thought everyone was born equal with natural rights to life, liberty, and property and Jean-Jacques Rousseau who despised inequality in government and felt that everyone should be recognized as equal in society. With these views in mind, along with what they desired, the countries of America and France composed their Independence documents, the Declaration of Independence and the Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen respectively. Due to their common inspiration, the two documents have quite a bit in common, but they also have a few differences, both of which will be explored in this essay.

There are a few similarities between the Declaration of Independence and the Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen. For example, both documents draw heavily upon Enlightenment ideas such as natural rights of life and liberty as wells as the concept that all men are created equal. They both stress freedom and equality. These documents are also really different in several ways. One of the main differences is the reason these documents were written. The Declaration of Independence was written to outline the wrongs against the colonies, whereas the Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen was written to state the rights of the people. Another difference between these two documents is the circumstance when these articles were written. The Declaration of Independence was written to to state man’s right to abolish and raise a new government and the French Declaration was written to stress everyone’s human
