The policy of person-centred care has become a mainstay of efforts to reform health care in the UK. Government policy is now built around this core concept, a major aspect of which is enabling individuals to participate in decision-making about their care at every level. I have learnt to be tolerant and to understand other people’s cultures, to respect beliefs and values of other people. This excited me, and I felt I wanted to find out how much I had learnt from this module and what to apply to my placement. I wanted to find out if the patients had individual rights at these homes. I was keen on observing how the staff cared for the aged, and to see if the standard set by the Care Homes Regulatory Office were being met. I was surprised to find that the department of health has stipulated the National Minimum Standard for the Care homes for Older People. I also felt apprehensive about being excluded by the carers, on the groups of respecting the patient’s private needs, if any. Nevertheless I was also concerned about the new environment of working in hand with the carers who understood what was expected from them. This was a challenge for me I then confirmed my…

This week’s assignment inspired me to reflect on one of my clients (an older adult) who used recreational drugs to cope with internal and external conflict for several years (about 35-40 years), and now he is having a difficult time taking prescription medications that are needed to address his chronic illnesses. A common complaint I hear is that his medication is not working and it is making him sick. At times, he thinks about going back to using recreational drugs. He has anxiety and cannot understand why he is taking so much medication. In the past, he would not advocate for himself or ask questions. During our sessions, we addressed his anxiety and now he is using his voice to advocate for his care (I see progress). This assignment helped…
