Individuality Vs Conformity

“No matter how much you try to hide or minimize difference, it seeps out in other ways,” as written by Lynne Soraya in her short web article, “Self Awareness And The Difficulties of Being Different.” We were all made to be unique. Not any two people on this Earth are exactly the same. Being treated differently for being unique takes a large negative toll on someone’s life so most of the time we as a society are constantly choosing the easier route of not standing out by doing what everyone else is. This is called conforming. The truth is, you can not avoid conforming or being an individual. Conforming and being an individual are inevitable parts of life and instead of trying to avoid doing one or the other, we should embrace both individuality and conformity and use them to our advantage.

In some cases, for example the incident with “Kitty Genovese” where a young woman after being stabbed to death outside of her apartment building in 1964 had a possible chance of surviving if any one of the bystanders that passed by her for had bothered to do something rather than believing someone else would take responsibility according to the short web post “Bystander Effect” published by Psychology Today, yes, conformity was the cause of a major tragedy. However, that is not always the case when it comes to conforming. If we ever got to the point where no one conformed at all our world would be complete chaos. We’d have no one obeying any rules or going with the flow. That's why we should only start using conformity in positive ways. There is no reason why we can’t have both conformity and individuality work in harmony and favorably for our society. It just makes sense to have them both in sync for the greater
