There are many different views on leadership. Some see it as the heroic endeavors of the outstanding, solitary figure, out in front doing what nobody else can. Others see leadership as something akin to rock-star celebrity, where leaders bask in the worshipful adulation of the multitudes. The rest see leadership as a complex science: theory-driven, complex, and only acquired through extensive training.
According to Jack Welch, Chairman and CEO of General Electric (GE) from 1981 to 2001, (While he was still with the light manufacturing giant, he was able to increase the company's worth 4,000%), there is a 4 E Model of Leadership. What are the 4Es? They are Energy, Energizers, Edge and Execute.
Individuals with energy love to "go, go, go." These people possess boundless energy and get up every day ready to attack the job at hand.
Energizers know how to spark others to perform. They outline a vision and get people to carry it out. They know how to get people excited about a cause or a crusade. They are selfless in giving others the credit when things go right, but quick to accept responsibility when things go awry.
People with an edge are competitive types. They know how to make the difficult decisions and never allow the degree of difficulty to stand in their …show more content…
It is found in the actions of the small child who sees that something is not right and speaks out seeking help to fix it, or a friend who senses that someone else is troubled and steps out of the ‘bubble’ of their own world to express caring concern.
Leadership is most often expressed in action, doing something that needs to be done, that others can do, but perhaps choose not to do. This kind of leadership focuses on the exceptional acts that express leadership, but which each one of us is capable of undertaking. Real leadership is, at heart, a relatively simple set of steps: it links paying attention to action, based on some reflective or reflexive thinking. Leaders are ‘doers’ after all!
Last but not least, to each of the leaders and ‘doers’ in the Prefect Body, I offer my sincere gratitude and congratulations for a year of contribution in the service of others.
