History of Computer
The first computers were people! That is, electronic computers (and the earlier mechanical computers) were given this name because they performed the work that had previously been assigned to people. "Computer" was originally a job title: it was used to describe those human beings (predominantly women) whose job it was to perform the repetitive calculations required to compute such things as navigational tables, tide charts, and planetary positions for astronomical almanacs. Imagine you had a job where hour after hour, day after day, you were to do nothing but compute multiplications. Boredom would quickly set in, leading to carelessness, leading to mistakes. And even on your best days you wouldn't be producing answers very fast. Therefore, inventors have been searching for hundreds of years for a way to mechanize (that is, find a mechanism that can perform) this task.
Abacus

The history of computers starts out about 2000 years ago, at the birth of the abacus, a wooden rack holding two horizontal wires with beads strung on them. When these beads are moved around, according to programming rules memorized by the user, all regular arithmetic problems can be done.

Astrolabe

Another important invention around the same time was the Astrolabe, used for navigation. Blaise Pascal is usually credited for building the first digital computer in 1642. It added numbers entered with dials and was made to help his father, a tax collector. In 1671, Gottfried Wilhelm von Leibniz invented a computer that was built in 1694. It could add, and, after changing some things around, multiply. Leibniz invented a special stepped gear mechanism for introducing the addend digits, and this is still being used. The prototypes made by Pascal and Leibniz were not used in many places, and considered weird until a little more than a century later.

Computers have become one of our necessities in our daily life which makes it so hard to imagine a time when they did not really exist. And the birth of first computer occurred in 1950. It was the Electrical Numerical Integrator and Calculator or ENIAC. It was made out of 18,000 vacuum tubes which made it to consume about 180,000 watts of electrical power. However, it was only capable to give function such as multiplying numbers rapidly. Due to rapid growth in population, Census Bureau of United States decided to have a machine to tabulate the data, hence,…

Owning a computer allows me to have many freedoms and options. I can have contact with friends and family by receiving and sending mail. Obtaining information is extremely easy with all of the available search engines and websites. A computer gives me easy access to get help with homework, schoolwork, and even do some online shopping if I feel the need for a break. Computers have advanced in technology so much, that today they are being used in a wide variety of ways. They can be used to help build cars to help perform surgery. In 1944 the very first electronic- mechanical computer called MARK 1 was created at Harvard. This machine was a massive calculator that was fifty one feet wide and eight feet tall (Chee, 1997). The beginning of the smaller computers that we know today started in 1959 when Honeywell developed the first computers that used transistors. These were followed by IBM who used integrated circuits. The very first personal computers were built in the 1970’s with the computers that are recognizable today starting in 1974 with…

World War I is still today one of the most critical historical events of all time. Its’ political, social and economic repercussions were extremely serious and took a huge hit on those who were involved and even to those who were not. Peace settlements were imposed on the defeated powers - Germany, Austria, Bulgaria, Hungary and Turkey - as a way to deal with the devas-tating results of the war. Empires collapsed, new nation states were formed whilst others disappeared, countries suffered from loss of territory and post-war trade and production were disrupted due to the new boundaries that were redrawn. All these measures created very complicated outcomes to those who suffered from the peace treaties, in particular Germany after the well-known…

People have been in awe of computers since they were first invented. At first scientist said that computers would only be for government usage only. "Then when the scientists saw the potential computers had, scientist then predicted that by 1990 computers may one day invade the home of just about ever citizen in the world" ("History" Internet), the scientists were slightly wrong, because by 1990 computers were just beginning to catch on. Then a few years later when scientists when to major corporations to get help with a special project, the corporations said no, because computers would just be a fad and they wouldn 't make much money off of it. "By definition Abacus is the first computer (the proper definition of a computer is one who or that which computes) ever invented" (Internet).…

The evolution of computers started way back in the late 1930s. Binary arithmetic is at the core of the computers of all times. History of computers dates back to the invention of a mechanical adding machine in 1642. Abacus, an early computing tool, invention of logarithm by John Napier and the invention of slide rules by William Oughtred were significant events in the evolution of computers.…

Development of computer architecture started as soon as the creation of Abacus in 500BC. The development continues and improved from time to time. In 1801, Joseph Marie Jacquard invented loom with punched cards. Blaise Pascal invented the first calculating machine that can do addition and subtraction in 1642. Baron Wilhelm von Leibniz builds a machine that can multiply and divide. In 1800s Charles Babbage created a n analytical engine that not only perform calculation but also print the output. George Boole then developed binary theory of logic which explain relationship between binary arithmetic and Boolean logic.…

The first computer could be an argument in and of itself. If the definition is a machine for performing calculations, then the abacus would be considered the first computer, but if the definition is a machine for performing calculations automatically, then the Z1 made by German scientist Konrad Zuse would be considered the first programmable computer. As the computer progressed, RAM (rapid access memory) was introduced in MIT’s Whirlwind in 1955. In 1975 Ed Roberts coined the term personal computer when he introduced the Altair 8800. (Odom) This computer was first sold for $1,750. As the computer industry grew, companies were needed to equalize prices and competition, and with the release of the apple 1 invented by Steve Wosniak helped equalize all of that. The technology of computers kept growing and people wanted to own a computer, but they were too big, averaging 500 miles of wire each, and with the invention of the Apple Lisa computer, people could own a computer without most of the set up. The Apple Lisa computer was the first computer with GUI, Graphic User Interface, which made computers more user friendly.…
