Informational Interview Assignment
For my informational interview assignment, I interviewed John Goodman of John Goodman CPA on October 17th. I choose to interview Mr. Goodman, because he owns his own firm and he’s a local that understands the area and market. We started out the interview with what lead him to his career in accounting. He always wanted to own his own business, he started out as a software designer for a tax firm. He picked up much of his initial knowledge of accounting by designing this software, after that he decided to start working in that accounting field. Eventually he did get his CPA and founded his firm. His day to day is primarily taxes for small businesses and individuals, but he also does some payroll for local small businesses. From here we talked about the variation in accounting clientele, from his experience to consider someone a client he must work with them for at least …show more content…
He believes with the advancements in AI and computing technology that the industry will become more automatized. This would require one to have more technical knowledge to be able to deal with any and all issues, but also allow them to stay relevant in a machine controlled industry. He did not give me a time line of when he believed when this would happen, but there was an expectation within the next ten to fifteen years. Some of the important skills he recommends to any one going into this field is computers, communication, and marketing. With him owning his own small firm he doesn’t have any IT personnel, so he does most of the maintenance and troubleshooting in the office. He highly recommends communication, so one is able to easily get relevant information from clients and insure that the information is accurate. When one doesn’t work for a large firm they must be able to properly market themselves and services to local businesses and individuals. One must be able to distinguish themselves from the

Jones noted that while at the FMA he was promoted to CEO of the association and he worked in that leadership role for several years. The most significant change came when the FMA decided to offer allied health professionals membership per the voting results from the current physician members which created some animosity within the organization. The votes were very narrow in margin which left some members alienated since they wanted to keep the association more focused on physicians only. Mr. Jones decided that the best way to address the membership was to inform them on how the decision will assist their practice as a whole by inviting their own staff to be a part of the continuing medical education process. Apparently it worked as according to him there were no reports of a mass exodus of physicians leaving FMA and membership grew stronger with the change implemented. The previous results…

Dr. Anthony Falgiani’s income tax class captured my interest and I knew immediately that tax would be my choice for future employment. At the suggestion of my Professors I volunteered with the VITA program which aided me with the human aspects of the sometimes difficult tax concerns that everyday individuals encounter as a preparer for the 2014 tax year and as a Site Coordinator for the 2015 tax year. As a Site Coordinator I had the chance to guide USCB students in their tax preparer roles and seek guidance and clarification on tax situations that were unfamiliar to me from my instructors Professor Jane Lambert and Dr. Anthony Falgiani. Consequently, my role in the VITA program caused me to pause and reflect that passing the CPA exams would not be enough to fill the gaps in my education to work in the public sector. USC’s taxation track is specifically geared toward my preference of practice after I graduate and will groom me to identify accounting concerns and provide value added solutions for my future clients.…

As an Accounting major, I am very interested and have become fond of learning about the varying business aspects within the sports industry. As a result, I decided to conduct my interview with a professional that is associated with the business operations of athletics. The person that I interviewed was Dawn Reynolds, the Senior Associate Athletic Director for Business and Finance here at the University of Miami. After initially getting in contact with Ms. Reynolds a few weeks ago, I was finally able to meet with her briefly and conduct my interview on November 30, 2010, in room 261 in the Hecht Athletics Center. Just to give a bit of background information about Ms. Reynolds, she is from Elmira, New York and now currently resides in Coral Gables, Florida. She graduated from the University of Miami with a major in Finance and started her career at Liberty University in Lynchburg, Virginia where she worked for four years as their budget coordinator. As a past president of the College Athletics Business Managers Association, she was named the College Athletic Business Manager of the Year in 2003 and has since served on various committees including the ACC Finance Committee and chairs the NCAA Minority Opportunities and Interests Committee.
