and had been involved in many organizational foundations (Bennison). Ryan’s toughness and determination towards his career are strongly recognized, both personally and professionally: yet, Nolan Ryan’s actions as a family man, a businessman, and a survivor in the chaotic world of celebrity sports illustrate his value as a positive role model for all Texans. Although the toughness of not being there at times during his career, Nolan had been a family man first. Every day he would call his wife 3 or 4 times to see how the children were doing and how she was dealing with them in his absents. Nolan stated, "Our family has always been a priority, so when the kids got out of school, the whole family went on the road with me. They learned to deal with people and saw the United States. In baseball, stress is put on marriages and family. We tried to deal with it on a level that we could make it work for our family and take advantage of the opportunities we had. The kids all became baseball fans and were troupers as travelers, so it was a good lifestyle for us. You do have to invest time and effort into it, but Ruth and I felt it was important.” While keeping the family a top priority, the children, now grown, are part of Nolan’s business ventures which still carry the same family values to date (Bennison). On the contrary, Ryan made his name known and had been respected on the baseball field for it, but in the business world the impact of respect was made well-known as well and for his creation of the Nolan Ryan Foundation.
He has several working cattle ranches, owns several banks and started his own branded beef company. For example, Ryan has two locations of The Express Bank of Texas first created in Alvin and another in Corpus Christi, Texas, which he has with investing partners and loyal customer backing (Barr). His grouping with select cattle ranchers gave rise to Nolan Ryan Beef, whose clientele consist of for example, Kroger’s grocery chain, restaurants and sporting venues. In early 2013, The Texas Rangers Baseball organization contracted Nolan Ryan Beef to be their source of meat for the Ballpark in Arlington (Shlachter). With the success in his career and in business, the Nolan Ryan Foundation had also been doing its part in success for communities. For instance, in Alvin, Texas, where he grew up in, The Nolan Ryan Foundation built the Nolan Ryan Center at Alvin Community College for Continuing Education
(Bennison).
Although Nolan Ryan continues to experience the pressures of the celebrity limelight, his public image remains positive. During his baseball career, Nolan had become the all-time strikeout leader, winner of 324 games and author of a record seven no-hitters in which he still holds in Major League Baseball to date. In 1999, The Ryan Express received the honor of being inducted into the Major League Baseball Hall of Fame for the accumulated accolades acquired in his yours as a pitcher. In 2008, he became the Texas Rangers 10th president and in March 11, 2011, received the title of CEO and is principle owner of the franchise. “I had my challenges and I try to explain that their gift is from God and not something they did. It's what they do with it that they have control over” Nolan tells his players. Since he started his involvement with the Rangers organization, the Texas Ranger went to their first post season in 2010, since 1999, and again in the 2011 season, which lead them to the World Series (Bennison).
As our own lives evolve, the life of Nolan Ryan is ever evolving, and the influences of his life in the public eye remain to be seen. However, despite the challenges of family importance, managing multiple ownerships of businesses and upholding a positive outlook on life, important decisions are made for the greater good. Nolan Ryan is not only known to be the greatest pitcher of our generation, but a great example for the next generation of player in sports or the up and coming businessman: The ultimate role model for us all.
