Uruguay, short for República Oriental del Uruguay, is the second smallest country in South American, located in the southern part of the continent. (Encyclopedia) Uruguay is bordered by Brazil to the north and east, Argentina to the west, and South Atlantic Ocean in the south. (Where) Uruguay is the smallest Spanish speaking nation in South America. It has a land mass of 176,220 square kilometers, which is slightly smaller than North Dakota. Uruguay is a water- rich country with lakes, rivers and lagoons. (Geography) Gently rolling grass plains cover the vast majority of Uruguay, and beautiful sandy beaches line the Atlantic coast. The government controls many of the country's corporations, for example, electricity and trade.(Economic) Brazil has been a very active trade partner, as well as, Argentina, and the United States. The main exports Uruguay provides are Animal products, ranging from wool, and hide, to frozen beef. They also export a number of machinery appliances and chemical products.(Encyclopedia)
The government is operated by the 1967 constitution. The president and vice president are elected into five year terms and may not seek for immediate reelection. The president has many jobs, include publishing laws and enforcing them, as well as, proposing new bills.(Government) The current president of Uruguay is Tabaré Vázquez, he has been in office since 2015. However, this is not his first time holding office, he was also president for the 2005-2010 term. (Tabaré)
Uruguay shares a musical interest with Argentina, the tango. (Encyclopedia) The tango originated in Argentina, by the middle class, but claimed by the upper class when the dance spread. Uruguay's most famous sport is Football (American Soccer). They won a gold medal, from the 1924 Olympic Games held in Paris, which was also the first time Uruguay has competed in the games. Other enjoyable sports include: basketball, tennis, and boxing.
