The Argentine flag is a light blue and white tri band with a "May yellow sun" in the center. The flag is twice as wide as tall. This flag was adopted on February 12, 1812, four years before Argentina declared its independence from Spain (1816). The "sol de mayo" design was added to the flag in 1818. The blue and white
colors were chosen by Manuel Belgrano, leader of the Argentine revolution against Spain, and represent the blue sky. White symbolizes purity and peace.
Flag Day of Argentina is celebrated on June 20, the anniversary of the death of Belgrano.
