English bulldogs originated in the British Isles which descended from ancient Asiatic mastiff. The dog was given the name “bull” because they were originally used in a bloody sport called bullbaiting, which was later banned in the 19th century, and used to drive cattle to market. They were aggressive, ferocious and courageous to successfully take down a full grown bull using only their teeth to bite into a bull’s neck making it difficult for the bull to fight back.
