The Game of Baseball
Introduction: The game of baseball is very intriguing. It’s been played since the 1800’s and continues today. Baseball is played all over the world and continues to grow today. Countries like Venezuela, Cuba, Dominican Republic, and USA are among the top countries who dominate this sport n make up the majority of the MLB but places such as Japan and many European countries are getting catch of this fascinating sport. Baseball’s founder, history, and major events are just a few subjects I’ll hit on in my speech.
Body: 1. The founder of modern day baseball is Alexander Cartwright. According to inventors.about.com Americans began playing baseball on
informal teams, using local rules, in the early 1800s. By the 1860s, the sport, unrivaled in popularity, was being described as America's national pastime. Alexander Cartwright is from New York and founded modern Baseball in 1845. Baseballhall.org says, Alexander Cartwright and the members of his New York Knickerbocker Base Ball Club came up with the first rules and regulations that modern baseball accepted, including the concept of foul territory, the distance between bases, three-out innings, and the elimination of retiring base runners by throwing batted baseballs at them. Alexander Joy Cartwright Jr. was born on April 17, 1820 in New York, New York and died on July 12, 1892 in Honolulu, Hawaii. 2. The history of baseball is this; Americans began playing baseball on informal teams, using local rules, in the early 1800s. According to inventors.about.com, the first recorded baseball game was held in 1846 when Alexander Cartwright's Knickerbockers lost to the New York Baseball Club. The game was held at the Elysian Fields, in Hoboken, New Jersey. In 1871 the National Association of Professional Base Ball Players was established as the first professional baseball league. Then in 1878 the Captain of Harvard University Baseball Club Frederick Thayer received a patent for baseball catcher mask. 3. There are some major events in baseball that I’d like to share with you and I’ll start off with October 1, 1903 the first world series was played by the Pittsburgh Pirates and the Boston Americans in 1903, with Boston prevailing 5 games to 3 to win the series, making the Boston Americans of the American League the first world series champions. 16 years later on the same date as the first world series was played during the 1919 World Series, 8 players of the Chicago White Sox were paid by petty underworld figures to intentionally throw the world series. The most notable out of the 8 players was “Shoeless” Joe Jackson. On April 15, 1947 arguably the greatest event in MLB history is when Jackie Robinson broke the color barrier and was the first African American to play in a game. He was on the Brooklyn Dodgers at the time. There are so many more events I could list, but these were the ones that stuck out.
Conclusion: In conclusion, Alexander Cartwright is the brilliant man, who invented America’s pastime, Americans have played baseball on informal teams since the 1800’s, and some major events in baseball’s history was the first world series played, 8 white sox players throwing a world series, and Jackie Robinson breaking the colored barrier. Now go out there and get dirty.
