Before taking a sip of his coffee, Kerry Charles gave the news-writing class at North Carolina A&T some sound advice. “Inspire someone. There is nothing more rewarding than knowing that your words or actions have inspired at least one person.”
Inspiring others is Kerry Charles’s main focus and what he says is the key to remaining humble in the news industry.
At 9 years old, Charles saw reporters rushing to the scene of a fire. From that experience, he knew that he wanted to be a news reporter and anchor. He joined WGHP-TV in 2011 where he is the co-anchor for Fox 8 Morning News. Through his endeavors, such as overcoming obstacles of race and age and accomplishing his biggest dream, Charles realized that it is also his job to help and inspire others reach their goals.
There are several experiences that formed the foundation for Charles’ career. As part of the interview process for a position on a children’s morning news show, Charles was required to travel around the United States for various tasks. The assignments included a trip to Disney World to interview people who claimed to have been encountered by extraterrestrial beings, as well as a memorable interview with legendary college football coach Lou Holtz at the University of Notre Dame. Through these interview experiences he learned to ask “what is your name and how do you spell it?” He says that this is a great way to begin the interview process. In middle school, Charles co-hosted and reported for a weekly radio station program in Ohio for children viewers. In high school, he reported and anchored for Kids’ News Network, an award-winning television program. He also modeled and participated in theater.
