Local changes in North Carolina towns and neighborhoods can be made in effort to promote bat life. Installing bat boxes around local homes can positively impact bats in local areas by providing an area for roosting (Bat House General Information). The best location for bat houses are on top of poles or buildings which provides the best protection from predators (Bat House General Information). Once a resident the bat will begin to feed on insects, therefor lowering the local insect population. Adding bat houses to a local community can benefit both parties, bat and human populations. …show more content…
Bat populations are struggling to uphold population numbers because “Bats usually have a long life span and a low reproductive output” (López-roig, Marc, and Serra-cobo 472).With a low reproductive output, a bats window of reproduction is a small season and must not be disturbed so it can be taken full advantage of.
Awareness needs to be at its fullest in humans when interacting with bat colonies and their natural habitats. The less natural habitats being destroyed the fewer man-made habitats will need to be built. There is a lack of common knowledge known about bats in the public (Bat Information). The more information that is spread about the benefits of bats and their colonies will spark more reaction and pro-action. The reaction will be the creation of bat boxes in communities, and the pro-action will be the benefits of building bat boxes in communities. Less insects, more fertilizer, and a healthier ecosystem with higher populations of
bats.
As a civilization that is not only local but global, bats are everywhere. Relative to any species loss, losing all bat species for good would not only negatively impact other animal life, but also human life (Bat Information). With many threats including human interaction, habitat loss, and the deadly White-Nose Syndrome the bat population needs help and every person can make a contribution. This change must start locally and grow into a global awareness. With heavy benefits including Guano, the bats droppings being an adequate fertilizer and a key ingredient to gun powder. Cross-Fertilization rates are higher reducing the genetic resistance of species (Reis 515). With the public’s attention scientists can develop a solution for White-Nose Syndrome with the surge of the bat species awareness. Increased awareness can equal out into increased funds for wildlife conservation organizations and more bat boxes to reside in.
Ultimately as bat preservation arises in the public’s view more man-made habitats will be built and the already essential forests will be restored. With the amount of bat habitats increasing the ecosystem balance will be restored throughout affected locations. This balance catalysts environmental change, reducing harmful insect population while generating the natural fertilizer Guano. After the resurgence of the Chiropteran populations, areas locally and globally that inhabit this unique species will be revered and studied. Human interaction will morph from a problem into a benefit to bat populations. Bat Colonies can thrive in coexistence with humans with the new public mindset about the life essence of bats.
