Current functioning is needed to know how to empower the child. Information such as their strengths and weaknesses are asked in regards to social support and specific skill sets. These questions give the therapist the needed information to approach the issues with a problem centered approach or a strength perspective. The questions about the child’s interests and hobbies are important for the therapist to build a rapport with the client. Research regarding these topics may need to be researched prior to the session to get a better understanding. For example, if the child enjoys playing a certain game, the therapist may tailor their strategies to the game. While observing a therapy session, I observed the therapist playing candy land with the child but the rules were slightly different than normal. There was a key and for each “double color”, whoever picked the card had discuss why someone might feel that emotion and ways to help cope with it. After the session, I asked the therapist how she came up with that, she said she was having a hard time getting the child to even say a word, so she referred to her intake form and playing candy land was one of the child favorite
