Article Background
In this study, the authors were trying to see the possible advantages of integrative care therapies, specifically massage therapy and healing touch, delivered to hospitalized children and adolescents in a Mid-western academic pediatric hospital. By using a retrospective clinical database review, they examined patients’ pain and relaxation ratings immediately before and after the integrative care therapies were done (Cotton, Luberto, Bogenschutz, Hathaway, Pelley, & Dusek, 2014). In short, their objective is to get some evidentiary support whether integrative care therapies will decrease their pain and increase their comfort at the hospital.

Their pain and relaxation levels were gathered using different scales: the Numerical Rating Scale (NRS-11), a pain scale from 0 to 11, 0 being no pain and 10 being worst pain, Face, Legs, Activity, Cry, Consolability (FLACC), a pain scale for kids ranging from newborn to 8 years old and those nonverbal kids older than 8 years with a 3-pont scale, 0 meaning no pain and 2 indicating relaxed/comfortable. Relaxation was analyzed from 0-5, 0 being asleep and 5 being extremely tensed or agitated (Cotton et al., 2014).
Research Design The study sample consisted of 519 children and adolescents hospitalized at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center. Patients had a mean age of 10.2 years, 224 were female, 383 were white, and most received massage therapy while as inpatients (Cotton et al., 2014). Their length of stay averaged 12 days and the patients’ range of chronic health conditions included cystic fibrosis, cancer, and headache (Cotton et al., 2014).
