Today’s global companies are looking for managers and employees that are motivated and has the right ability to move forward. Tel-Comm-Tek, (TCT) manufactures a variety of small office equipment such as copying machines, dictation units, laser printers, and paper shredders. The company is headquartered in the U.S., but has an Indian subsidiary. Steven Jones, managing director of TCT’s Indian subsidiary, has just resigned and needs to be replaced. TCT prefers to fill executive by promotion from within the company. TCT uses a mix of home, host and third country nationals. In additional, TCT rotates its managers among its foreign and U.S locations. TCT Headquarter sees international experience as an important facet of executive leadership. The Asian Regional Office selected a professional committee to nominate the new managing director for TCT in India. The committee identified six candidates Tom Wallace, Brett Harrison, Atasi Das, Ravi Desai, Jalan Bukit Seng, and Saumitra Chakraborty. The best candidate for the managing director position for the Indian subsidiary of TCT is Tom Wallace, a 30-year TCT veteran. From an ethnocentric point of view Wallace is the best man for the job he has the edge over the other candidates due to his longer tenure with TCT and relevant experience with managing a plant of similar size in the U.S and would be best able to integrate TCT’s operations into a local situation. He has expressed interest in foreign assignment and has a proficient performance rating. On the downside, Wallace and his wife speak only English and the local management may resent the both of them. Brent Harrison would also work out as managing director for TCT in India. At 40, he has spent 15 years with TCT, running line activities and supervising staff. His superiors consider him highly poised to move up into upper-level management within the next few years. Harrison has

In Nigeria, 50 percent of population lived on less than one US dollar per day. Of this, 65 percent lived in rural areas. A direct result of this could be seen on the handset ownership among the rural poor (one percent). The absence of a reliable national electricity grid in these areas raised the issue of higher operating costs for the mobile service provider due to running and maintenance of diesel generators needed to power the mobile base station sites. In addition to which, the threats of thefts and vandalism of expensive equipment at these sites were also challenges facing Celtel, the second largest mobile telecommunication company in Nigeria in 2007. The company was unable to raise awareness about their shift using conventional marketing strategies such as billboards as they were stolen, recycled or reused.…

Recessions are generally believed to be caused by a widespread drop in spending. Beginning in the United States in December 2007 the industrialized world has been undergoing a recession, a pronounced deceleration of economic activity.
