With the increased complexity of patients in the hospital setting, the need to care for patients in diverse situations particularly in the community and public health care settings, and the demand for nursing to step into more leadership roles, advancing education is critical in order to fulfill the health care requirements of the American public (Institute of Medicine [IOM], 2010). In addition, BSN prepared nurses are qualified to continue on to advanced practice positions which are needed to meet the increased demand for primary care. The IOM (2010) also recommends a change from a curriculum that is historically focused on preparing students for the acute care setting to one that also includes competencies in leadership, health policy, research and evidence based practice, team work, community and public health, and collaboration with other health care professionals to coordinate patient care. The program specific learning opportunity that I attended was the CONHCP Health Care Professional Panel. Although it was advertised that athletic trainers, health care administration professionals, and nursing professionals would speak at the event, only nursing experts were present. If there were more healthcare professionals available, information relating to the medical field would be more variated. Regardless of the limited number of experts, the nursing experts strived to operate the event to the best of their abilities. A liaison spoke about the general academic pathway that a nursing student must take to eventually achieve the position of a nurse. In addition, two level 3 nursing students explained about the content of clinical courses in depth and their own experiences that they have gained throughout their years in the nursing program. As nurses’ duties increase in difficulty and diversity, so must our knowledge base. The Tricouncil for nursing issued a “calling all RN/s to advance their education in the interest of enhancing quality and safety across the settings.”(May 2010). Advanced level nurses not only give excellent patient care increasing safety, but also serve as mentors and role model to new graduate nurses and ancillary nursing staff. This increases patient safety, allow the new nurses to grow in a positive learning environment and results in overall improved quality of care. Throughout the past two years I have worked as a pool nurse going to the various hospital departments improving my clinical skill and adding to by core of nursing knowledge. This millennial generation is key in determining health care years from now. There must be a rallying up of diverse young students who are interested in pursuing a career in health. Oftentimes, it is intimidating and sometimes discouraging for minorities to really commit to going after a health care career due to the stigma that has been created due to the types of people who have taken and are taking the healthcare field by storm. Encouragement, information, training, and exposure can all be beneficial to a young minority student who is wanting to go into health. Things should take place and be done way before medical or graduate school. The Summer Health Professions Education Program is a great example of a program that is taking the initiative to do something to help students way before medical school. This program is designed to recruit and prepare young, diverse, underrepresented students who will lead in health care.
