Mr. Holland Opus Essay
Sacrifices find their way into our lives when we are ready for them or not ready for them. For most of us life doesn’t always go the way we want it to, but it is the tough decisions that we make that tend to point us in the right direction where we will either learn or not to become a stronger individual. So we start in 1965. Glenn Holland arrives at his first day of teaching at J.F.K High School. Glenn Holland planned career pathway as becoming a composer is put off, as well as the music that he writes, he is not very excited to start his morning. In 1965 New York he takes up teaching at John F. Kennedy High School as a music teacher to free up some time so he can compose more. Little does he know that free time will not even be in the equation cause there won’t be any. Initially, he is frustrated at his inability to get through to his students but as time progresses; he becomes quite experienced at his profession and in fact a number of student successes. At home, he is devastated to learn that his new-born son is deaf and struggles over the years to develop a relationship with him. Through three decades, Holland becomes closer to students at J.F.K High School than he is with his own son. At one point in the movie, he is briefly tempted by the outstanding talent of a young female student, who invites him to leave his stressful, unsatisfying life and run off to New York City with her. After 30 years that Mr. Holland taught the music program at J.F.K High School, the music program at the school is cancelled and he begins to wonder what, if anything, has he really accomplished in his life.
