Chris McCandless, a Sophisticated Young Man.
Even though Chris wanted to get absolute freedom, his journey turned out to be a just selfish one, not even getting totally separated from the civilization or society.
It is possible that he went out on a journey to get everlasting freedom from strict rules and formats. Even if Chris was an intellectual student, getting all As, well enough to go to Harvard law school, one time, he got F on a Physics. The reason was that Chris did not follow the format that the teacher told to students, regardless of the answers. His father agrees with the teacher, which shows his father, as well as the teacher, was a very strict person, especially on rules. As he realized that his father had another wife, and thought of his father as a immoral man, this young man who was full of energy may wanted to get out the society and get free. As he got out of the society, he earns money by himself and travels by himself. The one contradiction that I found was that he needed the money. Nowadays, money is necessary for trade, economy; it became the basic part of our lives. In this sense, money can represent the civilized world, which Chris was not able to get rid of. If he did not need the money, there is no reason for him to work in a Macdonald or under Westerberg. Chris even mentions in one of his letters that he realized the money was necessary part of his journey, which seems contradictory for pure freedom.
Another contradiction could be found with his life in Alaska. The reason why he went there was because he was motivated by his books. One of them is “Call of the Wild”, by Jack London. The story of this book is about a dog from California, going back to Alaska undergoing lots of sufferings. It seems that the dog got absolute freedom, but the author himself never went to Alaska, not even into the wilds. Chris also thought that Alaska was a pure nature. He thought that this purity and isolation would enable him to find out who he truly

Why did the person known as Chris McCandless leave nearly all of his possessions behind cut ties with his family and, start traveling all over the country and also Mexico? In the first chapter of the novel shortly before he gets to that fateful spot in Alaska Chris tells Gallien “How I feed myself is none of the government’s business. Fuck their stupid rules.” Now for someone like McCandless to say this to someone he just met not too long ago says something about who the story is going be about. Chris by saying obviously has some problems with society.…

Through out the book, Chris is prompted to make many small decisions in order to determine how he will live the rest of his life. From the moment he decided to go onto the road from Virginia to the West Coast, then landing in Alaska, he made small mistakes due to ignorance to fine details. During the most part of the book, Christopher McCandless is struggling without himself knowing of it. Many people he sees and meets along the way have warned him about the dangers of traversing the wilderness, alone with very little supplies and experience. After journeying into the deep Alaskan wilderness, Chris's actions show that with ignorance to small details, suffering will soon follow.…

“Serious stuff, like he was baring his soul, kind of. He said he could tell me things that he couldn’t tell the others. You could see something was gnawing at him. It was pretty obvious he didn’t get along with his family, but he never said much about any of them except Carine, his little sister. He said they were pretty close". Overall I would say that Chris was ignorant, arrogant, selfish and a brave young man, simply because he was ignorant because he didn't know that some of the berries might kill him and these mistakes and ignorance lead him to his death, but overall for young who just graduated and got on his own in the wild I would say that he did a pretty good job on surviving for four months, "Said he didn't want to see a single person, no airplanes, no sign of civilization. He wanted to prove himself that he could make it on his own without anybody's help". he will always be remembered as a young brave man, who was seeking his own…

The first thing about Chris is that he was very bright. Even people noticed how smart he was, like when Franz said, “ He seemed very intelligent.” This shows that Ron sees how smart Chris is. It also explains to us that Chris knows what he is doing and that he wants to do it. Another thing about Chris is that he made food decisions. For instance, he learned off of the people who he met like when he learned how to smoke meat. This shows that he is preparing for his adventure in Alaska. Therefore demonstrating how he made good decisions. Another good decision that he made was buying the plant book. This shows that he isn’t crazy because he is preparing for his time in Alaska. Clearly Chris was a smart man who made some good choices on his journey.…

Although some may believe that Chris McCandless went into the wild because of inspiration, I think that his primary reason was due to his family issues and emotional damage. I feel as if he was trying to run away and leave his past life. I can agree with others beliefs that he was inspired because he did read many things and was very influenced by some writings. However, the apparent problems he had with his family caused this issue because he showed many times before that he didn’t like his home life. Others even saw that he was unhappy with his parents and he wanted to leave and live what he thought to be a more peaceful life. Not only was just his parents divorce talks, his arguments with his father, and his distance he felt from his mom and dad a huge problem for him, he also was emotionally damaged by other…

McCandless love to shame him for his petty mistakes, ill-preparedness, and selfishness. Followers of his radical ways are inspired by his audacity and fearlessness. However, all of these aspects of Chris are from a short time in his life, a smaller piece of a bigger picture. People judge Chris on the basis of a crazy trip he took in his twenties, a very common thing for the typical person his age. The reader of Chris’s story should not fail to realize that, by the very end of his journey, Chris was entering a new time in his life, a new way of being and thinking.…

In conclusion, Chris was not an idiot or selfish by leaving everything behind to live in the wild. Chris wanted to be free from the world he lived in, in which he thought was a very materialistic world. “My life isn't complete once i haven't been around the world yet”(Chris McCandless). Living how you want to live it doesn’t make you selfish. People are always talking about living your dreams, but when Chris attempts his they criticise him for everything he did. He was an ill-prepared individual and over confident. His over confidence reached a point where it scared people around him. We can see an example of his lack of preparation and arrogance when in April1992, he meets Gallien, a union electrician, while hitchhiking. Gallien recalls “He wasn’t carrying anywhere near much food and gear that you would expect a guy to be carrying for that kind of trip” (Krakauer 4). This is a crystal clear example of how ill-prepared Chris was. He was blind by his over confidence in that he didn’t see how dangerous this trip could be. He didn’t have adequate gear or food, but yet he expected to survive for four months. He thought he had everything he needed in his bag pack and the rest wasn’t worth having or carrying with him. . He wanted to proof to himself that we could live without civilization, help or anything man made. He thought that because he survived in Mexico, with Alaska the situation would be the same. Chris’s overconfidence was so present in his personality that everyone who surrounded him could notice it. His father, Walt recalls Chris reaction in 1986, by the end of the summer, when he tried to talk to Chris about his overconfidence. Walt said, “Chris was good at almost everything he tried, which made him…

Have you ever seen a hero who has run from a place where he has encountered problems? The answer is no because a hero is a person who is ready to face any difficulties in order to solve them. However, Christopher abandoned the place where he had problems, so his deeds such as leaving his family, money, and friends pointed out that he was a fool. Young children should be ready to sacrifice their lives in order to protect and develop their countries because if they don’t do it, who will? Nevertheless, Chris deserted his society instead of serving and protecting it. Once, he said, “How important it is in not life necessarily to be strong but feel strong.” His decision was the opposite of his quote because if he was strong or felt strong, he should have faced his problems in the society instead of his foolish decision, which was quitting the society. In addition, he also gave a bad message to all teenagers. His actions showed that leaving the society is a way to solve problems though it is the…

At his Emory University graduation, Christopher seemed happy but implied to his parents that he will be traveling for the summer. As stated from Into the Wild, “McCandless went into the wilderness not primarily to ponder nature or the world at large but, rather, to explore the inner country of his own soul.”(Krakauer 183) Christopher needed to find himself after being lied to his whole upbringing. Traveling was his escape from the corrupt humanity that he felt surrounded him.…
