It is apparent how life has changed since new inventions have been introduced in the human life. Over the past 50 years, advanced inventions have created and improved the world, and also it changed the period of time when they were created. The two creations that were created are the automobile and the phone. The automobile was created in 1908, and later appeared in Cold Sassy in the early 1900s, and everyone was surprised by this amazing creation. The phone first appeared in 1982, however, not a lot of people were able to purchase it, because of the extravagant price, but it became more accessible to people as time passed. Both of these creations have a major impact on the lives of people, because the phone revolutionizes
communication, and the automobile provides a faster route to any destination. Many inventions that demonstrate innovation are related with technology and have made a strong improvement to life.
The invention that impacted the lives of people in Cold Sassy was the automobile. In 1908, it was first created by the Ford Motor Company, the Model T. Henry Ford, the inventor, wanted to build a car that was available to all the common men. The creation changed the lives of the characters in Cold Sassy, because it shows how their lives were improved by providing them a faster way of traveling around the town. Grandpa and Miss Love buy a Pierce for $900, with four seats, so they can drive themselves and show other people how good it is. “Thet’s the one I wanted. But it was a two-seater, and Miss Love said we got to have room to take folks to ride or we ain’t go’n sell any. I saved by not buyin’ one a-them canvas tops -- hit costs extry -- and they
give me a dealer’s discount, besides (Burns, 258).” Grandpa buys two dealerships: Pierce and Cadillac, and he wants to sell cars to everyone in town, because he wishes to modernize it. Miss love and Grandpa Blakeslee have an idea of selling cars by putting the Pierce and the Cadillac in front of his store, so that everyone could see them and come inside and buy a car, too. “It’s the cars they’ll go home talking about. The first one and then another will buy one (Burns, 259)!” The buying of the first car, Hoyt’s Cadillac, is a sign that there is the beginning of a new era going in the town. Later, as more and more people buy an automobile, it will improve their lives. They could drive anywhere they want and it will take less time. When Grandpa waits for his car to arrive, the whole town waits with him, because the family and the town were more excited than ever. For the first time, the town have something good to talk about and enjoy. “ I want y’all to git a good look at this here artemobile, folks! See how she works! I ain’t aimin’ to have the only Pierce in town for long! I’m a-go’n sell all y’all one. Folks, a new day’s a-dawnin’ for Cold Sassy! -- BAM -- We go’n put ever man in town behind a dang artermobile wheel! The crowd clapped and whistled like they thought Grandpa was giving motorcars away (Burns, 273).” Everyone is excited to own their own automobile, because they know that in that period of time, it is the best invention ever created. The Tweedy’s family car is the most visible symbol that the town is modernizing, and as time goes by, the automobiles are a staple in everyone’s lives. The invention that was created in the last 50 years and that impacts our everyday life is the phone.
Antonio Meucci began to design the talking telephone in 1848. “When the first mobile phone was released to the public in 1982, not many caught on to the fad, mainly because of the outrageous price and bulkiness of the first model. But times have changed since then and now this technology is not only a product that sixty percent of the world owns, but it is something you never leave your house without (Background Information | The History of the Mobile Phone).” The phone becomes a staple for humans that provides us with multiple benefits. For example, calling relatives from the other side of the globe, having an installed GPS that could direct to the desired destination and many more. “ The modern smartphone is an evolution of cell phones that combines their usual functionality with that of music players and even computers. Smartphones offer an array of features including games, music playback, email, Internet browsing and document editing. In essence, these smartphones are the Swiss army knives of the cell phone world (How Cell Phones Have Changed the World).” Smartphones gives a possibility of a faster access to the internet without using a laptop. Living without a phone is like not having a car or a house, that is how important this technology has become to us. It is infiltrated in our daily lives from the day it was created. “The cell phone has become an important
communication tool that is used by people all over the world to keep in contact with each other at any time. Although they started off as quite bulky devices they are now very sleek, small and portable, comfortably fitting in a user's pocket and surviving for hours on end thanks to a rechargeable battery (Cell Phone Facts - Mobile Phone Information, Interesting IPhone Apps, Technology).” The phone is the creation that will be used many years, because of its possibilities. From a big bulky phone, it transformed into a small, portable phone that fits into a pocket, and thanks to a rechargeable battery, it could be used for more than 5 hours. These inventions have improved our lives and provide us with more and more information about inventions that are created every day. New creations improve the lives of people, and it all started when the creators came up with these inventions. The differences between these creations are that they were created in different time periods and that both of them have different uses. The automobile gives us the possibility to travel around the world faster than with carriages and it provides shelter in times of weather difficulties. The similarities between them are that both of these inventions have a considerable impact on the world. They have been created and have been used for more than 50 years. Now it is hard to imagine our lives without them. Our existence have been upgraded with the help of these inventions.
