Wait there’s more, a lot of Filipino citizens eat junk foods and drinking beverages that is not good to our health and causing a bog contribution to the problem. Most of the children or even adults are more attracted to the non-nutritious one, instead of fruits and vegetables that can supply our body’s nutritional needs. Researchers found many ways to divert the vitamins and minerals from fruits and vegetables to a most liked foods, like fruit shakes. But most of us can’t afford it or too lazy to prepare it.

So that we’ve chosen lollipop to use our original flavor coming from the most hated vegetable: Bitter gourd (Momordica Charantia) or locally known as Ampalaya. But here comes a big problem. So as an alternative source of the sweet taste is the Watermelon (Citrillus Lanatus) also known as Pakwan here in Philippines, the nutritional value of the Watermelon will make the lollipop even more tasty and nutritious. Even this will only contribute low amount remedy of malnutrition, at least in a low price, anyone can afford this healthy and tasty lollipop.

Growing up, candy was a prize. Maybe it was because my dad didn’t want to waste money on artificial sweeteners. Sure, my friends had candy, but my father never encouraged a love of candy. Thus, was the reason I grew up not caring much for sweet candy. My dad and I migrated to the U.S. shortly before I turned five. Here, I discovered a vast variety of candy; much more diverse that in Trinidad. There are brand names and new flavors I had not heard of.…

With such an obsession with sweet foods, there is an obvious desire for an explanation of how such a once unknown substance took center stage on everybody’s snack, dessert, and candy list. That’s where Sidney W. Mintz comes into play. He decided to write this book Sweetness and Power, and from the looks of all the sources he used to substantiate his ideas and data, it seems that he is not the first person to find the role that sugar plays in modern society important. By analyzing who Mintz’s audience is meant to be, what goals he has in writing this book, what structure his book incorporates, what type,…

Another reason cafeterias should start serving healthier food is that junk food does not give kids the energy needed to stay focused in school or the power to participate in sports. “The cafeteria must offer produce, dairy, protein and grain, but three groups constitute a full meal, so many students leave behind the fruits and vegetables” (Martinez, 1). Lunch is right in the middle of the day, if you eat fatty or sugary foods, it could cause you to get tired and not pay attention in your afternoon classes. In addition, junk food caps your energy, which affects your physical activity. You cannot perform your best if you don’t have any energy. Children should be eating more healthy, natural foods.…

Few of us are really aware of the dangers associated with all the numerous sugar substitutes available in the supermarkets. More common awareness is using “artificial sweeteners” to satisfy our “sweet” taste buds and at the same time reducing our caloric intake. But, how beneficial are these, if they are doing more harm than good to our health? Could these be hazardous to one’s health? If known to be harmful to the precious human body, would the choice still be to consume? Artificial sweeteners have been highly debated and scrutinized for decades. Realistically, who doesn’t like the taste of sugar? The majority of people use artificial sweeteners to reduce our calorie consumption; although, these are also used for the control of diabetes and other health issues. The thought of keeping ourselves at a healthy weight and eating our cake too, is more than appealing! Unfortunately, these sweeteners are not all they are cracked up to be. As a person working in the pharmaceutical world and around health education, I strongly believe the health risk associated with consuming artificial sweeteners far outweighs the alternative, consuming a smaller portion of natural sugars.…

Eating right, staying active and maintaining a healthy weight are the primary objectives of a devoted health conscious community. But making healthy food choice is not always easy. Advances in food technology have dramatically changed the way we eat. Frozen and canned foods, for example are now less expensive and more readily available then fresh foods in most places. In spite of that fresh foods remain the top choices for many people. The general impression is that fresh food is better for us than frozen or canned food because fresh food (provided it has not been overly steamed or overly boiled) arrives at our table with its appearance largely unchanged and its nutrients including fiber content intact. Additionally, canned foods are notorious for being higher in added salt and sugar, and frozen meals are known for the additives they often require (such as emulsifiers and binders found in frozen dessert). Most nutritionists and dieticians would agree that fresh fruits and vegetables are nutritionally ideal. But they would also always add that it is better to eat frozen or canned products than no produce at all. Though vegetables fresh from the farm or just picked are more nutritious than their frozen or canned counterparts, frozen and canned vegetables are an acceptable nutritional alternative. Canned fruit may not have the fresh flavor and firm texture of recently harvested ripe fruit, but it does provide fiber, carbohydrates and essential minerals. Although fruit may lose some of its vitamin content during the canning process, its basic nutritional profile is similar to fresh fruit. Its soft texture may be an advantage for anyone following a bland diet for medical reasons. If someone can’t tolerate the roughage in fresh fruit, he or she may find that canned varieties are easier to digest. The amount of time between the harvest of a vegetable and when it lands in the freezer or on a plate dictates how many nutrients stay and…
