McDowell would eventually command a corps at the Second Battle of Manassas, which resulted in another defeat. On July 1, 1864, McDowell was put in command of the Department of the Pacific, and was relatively inactive for the remainder of the war.He died May 4, 1885 he died from a heart attack in California.
Battle Write-up
The first battle of Bull Run occurred on July, 21st 1861. The battle was fought near Fairfax county, Virginia. The battle was geographically located west of the Potomac river at a railroad intersection in Manassas Junction. The Union military forces was led by Brigadier General, Irvin McDowell. While P. G. T. Beauregard and Joseph E. Johnston led the Confederate forces into battle.
The Union assaulted the Confederate forces at Manassas Junction, arriving by railroad the Union attempted to destroy the confederate forces but couldn’t breach their defensive line and were forced to retreat. The Confederacy Forced the Union to retreat ending in a Confederate Victory. McDowells men suffered 480 deaths with 1,000 with 1,200 missing men, while johnson lost 390 men with 2,000 wounded and about 12 missing. Thomas Jackson also got his nickname in this battle, “Stonewall”.

-We decided to draw a engraving of Stonewall Jackson. He will be riding a horse chasing the union away from Manassas. It symbolizes the confederate the first major victory of the civil war. It also shows him chasing the union away on a trail that he got his nickname “Stonewall” from this battle. It was ironic that he won the first major battle but also lost the war for the confederation.
