determines his/her’s future.
The Declaration of Independence gives every individual unalienable rights which are rights, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal,” (Declaration of Independence, ¶ 2).
The quote shows that our founding fathers originally wanted everyone to be treated equally and given the same rights. Today all people, no matter the race, has the same equal rights given to them. Amendment 1: Freedom of religion, assembly, press. petition, and speech (Bill of Rights, Amendment 1). The quote shows what gives Americans right to a free will. The first amendment is what supports the main point made in the Declaration of Independence. Moreover, equality is distributed to all U.S Citizens through the Declaration of Independence and the Bill of Rights.
The U.S. government is based around equality in the way the country is managed. “All legislative Powers herein granted shall be vested in a Congress of the United States, which shall consist of a Senate and House of Representatives...The House of Representatives shall be composed of Members chosen every second Year by the People of the several States, and the Electors in each State shall have the Qualifications requisite for Electors of the most numerous Branch of the State Legislature...The Senate of the United States shall be composed of two Senators from each State, chosen by the Legislature
thereof, for six Years; and each Senator shall have one Vote,” (U.S. Constitution, Article 1: Section 1, 2, and 3). The quote shows the make up of one of the three branches of government--Legislative, Executive, and Judicial branches--the Legislative branch. The Founding Fathers of our country wanted to be sure no branch of government would be able to overpower one another. Imagine the U.S. government as one big game of rock, paper, scissors-- each can overpower each other. “The executive Power shall be vested in a President of the United States of America. He shall hold his Office during the Term of four Years, and, together with the Vice President, chosen for the same Term, be elected, as follows...The judicial Power of the United States, shall be vested in one supreme Court, and in such inferior Courts as the Congress may from time to time ordain and establish. The Judges, both of the supreme and inferior Courts, shall hold their Offices during good Behaviour, and shall, at stated Times, receive for their Services, a Compensation, which shall not be diminished during their Continuance in Office,” (U.S. Constitution, Article 2: Section 1, Article 3: Section 1). The U.S. government also distributes responsibilities evenly to all three branches of government. For example, The Legislative branch is responsible for establishing laws, the Executive branch is responsible for enforcing the laws, and the Judicial branch is in charge of insuring the laws are considered “Constitutional.” Furthermore, the United States values equality enough to enforce the action at the core--the government.
However, some say that equality is not achievable in society. “Even if we discount the failures of other presidential democracies, though, we should not dismiss the fact that the U.S. Constitution was modeled on a system that collapsed into civil war, and that it is inherently fragile,” (“America’s Fragile Constitution,”17). This quote voices the U.S. “equality based” government is not going to withstand because the whole country almost tore each other apart in the Civil War. This is not true because the equality of the Constitution was being over emphasized at this point in U.S. history and now helps our country survive today. “The Constitution was an experiment, and its signers believed that its success was contingent on the willingness of varied constituencies to work together,” (“America’s Fragile Constitution,” 20). The quote conveys the Constitution was not supposed to last because it was subject to chance and was unlikely to be approved. The is inaccurate because the Constitution was written with careful thought so no one person would be treated with inequality as long as the government could take action about it. The United States founders made equality possible through the Constitution and the Bill of Rights. Based upon the U.S. Constitution, equality is achievable because everyone is given the same rights, but the way an individual uses those rights is what determines his/her’s future. The Declaration of Independence gives every individual unalienable rights which are rights, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. The U.S. government is based around equality in the way the country is managed. However, some say that equality is not achievable in society. Throught the Constitution and several U.S. documents equality is achievable because of the foundation the United States is built upon.
