Anthem Essay Question 3
From the beginning, Equality 7-2521 was different. As we can see in this novel, different is unsatisfactory. Equality was smart, in the book he suggest “learning was too easy”. This can be a reason why Equality 7-2521 was deemed the job of a street sweeper, despite his intelligence. Was it an error or was it intended?
In the beginning of ‘Anthem’, Equality 7-2521 was talking about how he was scorned upon knowing more than he should. One meaningful quote from the book is “The secrets of this world are not for all men to see but only for those that will seek them.” Equality searched and absorbed knowledge and everything around him. He was sent to the basement as punishment. As he grew he continued to have trouble in school. As asserted in the book being smart “is a great sin, to be born with a head too big”. Like Equality 7-2521 concluded, “It was not good to be different from your brothers.”
Equality 7-2521 was the odd ball out of his brothers. At least we know it, but he kept his desire for knowledge a secret, until he got caught in the tunnel. It is very interesting that he is being criticized because of his knowledge, almost like a parallel universe.
Equality is supposed to mean the state of being equal, especially in status, rights, and opportunities. This society is anything but. People are set into houses from the time they are born, from the time that they die, not being able to be free. That’s the thing though, they don’t want anyone to be free, they have their eyes
