Is Disney Rasist
Is Disney actually hutting our children? In the years growing up as a child it is practically impossible to find children that did not watch or claim to have a favorite Disney movie of their own. With young children being so easily influenced by what they see on TV this could be a problem. One major cause could be parents working more hours than they have in the past. The result of working is parents having less time to spend with their children. And because parents don’t have the extra time to spend with their children they look for other ways to entertain their children while they are busy. One of the most common ways of entertaining children is turning the TV on, whether it is movies, TV programs or cartoons. Children are exposed to a great deal of violence, sex and, messages to learn from. According to the University of Michigan Health System kids watch on average 32 hours of television and videos a week (television and children 2010). The decision of what to let children watch while during those 32 hours starts to become a question as well. One obvious idea would be allowing children to watch Disney movies. But why Disney movies over the movies made by other popular film studios. What is it that makes Disney movies any better than those other movies? Well according to any other movie or that are Since 1938 Disney has made over two hundred different movies. The first movie titled, “Snow White” rolled out onto the shelves to the adoring hungry youth. It was a huge hit. Since then Disney has claimed about sixty films that are “child friendly.” The question is what makes a Disney movie child friendly? According to Parents Magazine, “Disney Movies have fun, are light hearted, have dark and depressing moments when needed, but are still cute, yet some are surprisingly deep or have twisted turns. They all ultimately end on a good positive note that boosts the self esteem of the viewer and leaves a warm fuzzy feeling inside.” (Milvy,”The 50 Best

Visual entertainment media is a part of everyday life, anywhere from cellphones, television, internet, newspaper, etc. All of the forms of visual entertainment media have helped shaped America, also the culture and values that have developed over the years. The most common visual entertainment media form that has shaped, influenced, the culture and values in America is cable television. Cable television covers so many different forms within itself, news channels, religious channels, debate channels, and different types of local television programs. Each of these channels carries their own message, with entertainment values that are viewed by the person watching the program. Many forms of visual entertainment carry a negative social influence message, self-education is important on these types of visual entertainment in order to determine what best fits your personal situation. If there are, guidelines that are set on, what type of visual entertainment are acceptable, internet access, cell phone access, and television channels. Than the amount of negative influence, someone may be subjected to can be cut down dramatically, giving the opportunity for positive experiences to be put in its place. The idea of visual entertainment media is to help spread education, and social entertainment purposes. One way to ensure that this is the experience that is shared is to limit what you make available to your family and how much is acceptable. I think that it is very easy for adolescent minds to be subjected to influence, both positive and negative depending on what their social surrounding support frequently. If a child is exposed to violent, sexual, or death filled entertainment, it is more likely for them to incorporate these things into their everyday social environment. This affects their social behavior and attitudes to not only peers, but also any given situation. The influences these entertainment types have can either become a person or just be a part of everyday…

At a very young age, many children are exposed to movies, whether at the theater or on videos at home. One major producer of children’s movies is the Disney corporation. These animated films are often perceived as innocent and wholesome. Given the influence the Disney ideology has on children, it is imperative for parents, teachers and other adults to understand how such films attract the attention and shape the values of the children who view and buy them.…

There are always many sides of the story. People always tend to recreate their own story. Disney has been part of many childhoods. As I remember every kid wanted to be a prince or princess like the character of a Disney movie they watched. Disney was part of my childhood, it made me laugh, brought joy, sadness and memories I can never forget. When a Disney movie was on TV, I could not take my eyes off it. I had a set schedule from 6 pm to 8 pm in the evening was when the cartoons would be playing on a local channel. And they would always play a Walt Disney cartoon. My favorite was Pluto short films, because I always wanted a dog but couldn’t have one. Disney brought kids dream into a screen, created a character that reflects who you are.…

I believe that television can influence children in good and bad ways. Depending of what types of shows and channels the kids are watching it could actually be a good thing. If a child is only allowed to watch kids shows, and kids’ channels they won’t learn anything bad. If children are just watching shows like Dora the Explorer and Jake’s Neverland Island, they aren’t going to learn anything bad; they may actually learn things that are beneficial. With Dora the Explorer they learn problem solving and also get introduced to some Mexican culture and Spanish. If you were to let a child watch adult shows though, it may not turn out very well. For instance, if you let a little girl grow up watching shows like Teen Mom and 16 and Pregnant, they grow up thinking that the way these girls act is ok, because hey, if they’re on TV, they must be doing something right.…

I strongly disagree with Fowls comments. He believes that Disney is taking over children's lives and that it reinforces a simplistic and narrow view of life. I do not believe that this is correct. Every little girl wants to be a beautiful princess and every boy, a big, strong man, who fights off the bad guys. These are just dreams though and we want to give our youth something to believe in.…

As one of the issues that affect children because they watch too much television is health wise. The biggest issue that has been targeted the most is children becoming overweight. “The number of children and adolescents who are overweight or obese has doubled in the past 20 years in the U.S. according to the APP. (LimiTV, n.d.) Obesity has become a big factor and one of the reason why is due to children not having physical activity part of their daily routine. Parents sometimes relay in the television to be some sort of a babysitter in case they are trying to finish any tasks they have. Making this caused a neglect of interaction with…

    Exposure to Stereotypes

Children between the ages of 2 and 5 spend an average of about 32 hours a week in front of the television watching movies and television, and children between the ages of 6 and 11 spend about 28 hours a week in front of the television (No Author, 2010). With that being said, I think that our biggest influence on children is television and movies. Although children’s television shows seem to be making a more conscious effort when it comes to equality among race, there are still subtle influences that many parents may not recognize are being taught to their children. I think that the biggest stereotypical area I have seen on television have to do with gender. Even 30 second commercials can make a lasting impression on children. When thinking of commercial about teddy bears and toy cars it is easy for most people to determine which commercial girls would play in and which commercial boys would play in. As children grow and remember what is presented to them they begin to believe that girls and boys are different and that they deserve different things.…
