Is Hamlet Sane Or Insane?
The question comes up over and over again if Hamlet is sane or insane. Hamlet’s life events, from the death of his father to the death of his lover, can be enough to push anyone to the edge of sanity and become insane. There is a lot of things that happen in the play that makes you believe he is insane. He does act strange and odd in the play, but i believe it was an act, and he wanted to make everyone think he was insane. He wanted to throw us off. In the play he even says “ I essentially am not madness, but mad in craft.” Shakespeare knew what he was doing when he wrote the play. He saw much to be gained by it. He wanted to throw everyone else in the play off. I think that’s why they wanted to send him to england. I do believe his love for Ophelia was real and the things he did were irrational but the dramatic value of the play made it seem he wasn’t the brightest person.

Shakespeare has made a lot of critics believe that his madness was a real thing. . A very important quote is when he is talking to Gertrude, he says: "I essentially am not in madness, but mad in craft". Hamlet is pretty much telling his mother that he is only pretending to be mad, but is not crazy. A lot of people will say that those who are crazy will constantly tell people that they

Hamlet is only pretending to be crazy, and when it comes down to it he knows what is right and what is going on. He tells Rozencrantz and Guildestern: "I am but mad north-north-west. When the wind is southerly, I know hawk from a handsaw". There is a reason behind his “craziness”; His life is beginning to fall apart. First he finds out his father passed away, and then the ghost tells Hamlet that it was Hamlet’s Uncle Claudius who killed him, and his mother has married his Uncle Claudius, the murderer and king. Not only that, but he and pretends not to love Ophelia only to find out that she committed suicide mostly because of

Prior to talking about Hamlet’s madness, we must consider two main options: He was either mad since birth, or struck by insanity just after the death of his father, followed by the encounter with the ghost. The answer is easy for me: even if the first one were true, it would not change much in our perception of the story, because we meet Hamlet and all the other characters at a certain definite point from which they develop, so what is important in the story are not their pasts, but their futures. Therefore, rather than pointlessly contemplating about Hamlet’s possible inborn mental defects, we should concentrate on the clearer proofs of his insanity that come after the death of the King, which the text undoubtedly offers. The first one on the almost infinite list is a sad whimper – a moan that followed the realization that his father had died:…

On this question there are four different hypotheses: (1) That Hamlet was throughout perfectly sane, but feigned insanity; (2) that Hamlet was after his interview with the Ghost more or less insane; (3) that in Hamlet insanity was latent, but was only fully developed after the Court-play; (4) that Hamlet was neither insane, nor feigned to be so.…

“Great wits are sure to madness near allied, and thin partitions do their bounds divide”. Although this quote by John Dryden was not directed towards Hamlet, this quote relates well to the argument of whether or not Hamlet was insane. The character of Hamlet in Shakespeare’s play The Tragical History of Hamlet, Prince of Denmark is perhaps one of the most complex tragic heroes and possibly the most analyzed in all of English literature. Whether Hamlet was actually insane, or simply acting mad depends on the reader’s interpretation of the play. Hamlet is a complex character, he is the direct result of his psychological disorders. He is capable of quickly changing his emotions and state of mind from being happy, to being sorrowful, to being seemingly…

There isn't any doubt on who really went mad in this book. Hamlet was mad, but wasn't the crazy kind of mad. He is angry at the fact that his father was murdered. Ophelia actually played the truly mad role of the this book. She let the emotions take over her state of mind. Ophelia's character was made more weak than men. She couldn't handle the pain and suffering. Ophelia and Hamlet both went through trials and troubles, but only Hamlet could handle it. This entire book deals with madness both fake and real. It shows just how it affects people and how differently people take…

Hamlet appears to be insane, after Polonius's death, in act IV scene II. There are indications, though, that persuade me to think other wise. Certainly, Hamlet has plenty of reasons to be insane at this point. His day has been hectic-he finally determined Claudius had killed his father, the chance to kill Claudius confronted him, he comes very close to convincing Gertrude that Claudius killed his father, he accidentally kills Polonius, and finally the ghost of his father visits him. These situations are enough to bring Hamlet to insanity, but he remains sharp and credible.

Hamlet is able to make smart remarks to Rosencrantz and Guildenstern, comparing then to sponges, "When he (Claudius) needs what you have gleaned, it is but squeezing…

A way that we can see that this is a possibility is what Polonius says about Hamlet, "That she should lock herself from his resort...she took the fruits of my advice; and he repulsed...into the madness wherein he now raves"(2.2.134-141). As Polonius talks to the king and queen we can see that others believe that this has also been another contributor to Hamlets madness. Hamlet has shown his love for Ophelia in many ways, but when he was rejected by her it broke his heart. Another quote that shows that Hamlet was broken by Ophelia's rejection is, "I did love you once...you should not have believed me; for virtue cannot...I love you not"(3.1.115-119). This is a direct quote from Hamlet expressing his love from Ophelia that was torn away from him. In this scene we see Hamlet get extremely angry with Ophelia's betrayal of his love. There would have been a giant change in the way the play would have played out if Ophelia would have returned the love Hamlet had for…

We can definitely see his madness and the evidence that he really goes mad when he said he sees his father’s ghost in his mother’s chambers while his mother does not see the ghost. Hamlet intentions in acting insane in order to get to his goal: "I essentially am not in madness”, Hamlet tells his mother that he is not mad and that he is mad in craft. [Act III, scene IV, lines 188-199]. Hamlet believes he is sane all the times, and did not realize that his actions and his madness is overwhelming him. His attitude resulted to the death of several people which included his mother and the King of Denmark. He is more desperate with the marriage of his mother to his uncle. We realize his violence and jealousy towards his mother. With these events, he builds frustration and anger and which turns him into an insane character. After Hamlet had killed Polonius, he had nothing to say and he even went on to call him a rat. This shows that he doesn’t care much about killing someone and moreover it does not affect him too much because he is so persistent in revenge. It seems as if he will go above and beyond his limits to get revenge. After the death of Polonius, Ophelia dies and this does not affect Hamlet as much as we believe in the consequences because he does state that, “[He] did love [Ophelia] once,”…

Early on in the play the reader is shown that Hamlet is going to act insane in order to figure out the murder of his father. Therefore, at random moments throughout the play, Hamlet will act insane in so that he can in turn retrieve more information about the death of his father. Although young and handsome Hamlet says he is feigning his madness many readers have called into question whether or not he is genuinely mad. The fact that he is indeed going mad at times is true. It is true for many reasons. Reasons such as questioning his existence, showing true evidence of insanity not achievable by a sane person and at times using consequentialism in his train of thought. There are many factors that play into…

Hamlet still doesn’t sound insane though, because coming back to deliver a message to Ophelia could mean something important just for her. He might want to to say what is going to happen and warn her without scaring or hurting her more than she already was. Hamlet is not insane. People are trying to manipulate him to become insane. However, he has a clear mind and is able to plot his revenge. Hamlet may have suffered and dealt with a lot, but that doesn’t mean he is crazy. Hamlet dealt with fake friends, love, and loss, which makes life more complicated. This does not mean Hamlet is going to give up though until he gets what he wants. Also, why Hamlet is not insane and is faking being insane to have the freedom to examine Claudius’s guilt, to find a way to do what the ghost; his father, asks him to do. Also, to make people think he was not a threat, to distract the attention from investigating into his father’s death while people got in his way and tried to ruin it. That is why I believe Hamlet is faking being insane because everyone around him tries to trick him and he doesn’t fall for their games, and he manages to give all he can and never gives up. He did accomplish on tricking everyone else and play mind games to think he is insane, but all in all he just wanted to get the truth about his father’s death and revenge and he wants it known he is not…

Hamlet is regarded as one of Shakespeare’s best plays. Most critics would go as far to say that it is even one of the greatest works of literature from the seventeenth century. One of the many reasons Hamlet is so highly acclaimed is due to its controversial/ambiguous conflicts. For example: Throughout the play, Hamlet characters struggle to understand whether Prince Hamlet suffers from insanity or not. “Though this be madness, yet there is method in’t” (2.2.195-196). This quote shows that although Polonius thinks Prince Hamlet is crazy, he also feels he is quick-witted. During this time period, people were not educated on the matters of mental health. Present day, where people are educated on such matters, Hamlet is clearly suffering from…

    Hamlet's Insanity

In Shakespeare's "Hamlet", Hamlet, the main character, displays a very indecisive and uncertain demeanor throughout Hamlet. This recurrent behavior is displayed when: Hamlet first encounters the Ghost of his father, to learn that Hamlet's Uncle, the King, killed Hamlet's Father, also in Shakespeare's most prolific monologue of Hamlet and lastly when Hamlet stabs one of the King's confidants, Polonius. Hamlet's wavering decision making as well as his uncertainty in everything leads to Hamlet's apparent insanity; although he is not completely insane, just to a certain degree that allows him to be somewhat sane.…

    The Sanity of Hamlet

Hamlet was too “assiduous” and “methodical,” (Firkins 631)to be psychotic. His mind was not affected by all of the affairs that took place, it was his character that was affected. Hamlet saw much to be gained by feigning his madness, and because of this he did many things that the persons of the play construed to be insanity. Another key factor that favors his sanity, is his madness around certain characters. Around Polonius, Claudius, Gertrude, Ophelia, Rosencrantz, and Guildenstern he behaves completely irrational, but around Horatio he is completely civil. He only lapses into prose when he is fabricating insanity. Hamlet is simply a man dealing with a futile plight. His diction was so cleverly composed…
