his point on how important handwriting used to be and how the relevance of it should remain the…
[The research showed that textism was quite low. The data reflected a negative association between textism used in a daily basis, and formal writing. Also, a positive relationship was concluded between textism and informal writing. The relationships amongst these associations varied according to gender, age, and level of education. The highest variation was mainly amongst those without a college education.] When a person uses the informal writing method on a…
The general argument made by Jessica Bennett in her article,”The Curse of Cursive”, published in Newsweek, addresses that cursive is unnecessary. Bennett argues that penmanship is irrelevant because the majority of the population don’t integrate cursive in their handwriting. She provides evidence that indicates most individuals don’t utilize penmanship from “in 2006, just 15 percent of SAT takers used cursive on the written test”(P.4). Through presenting that the minority of students employ cursive on the written test, she suggests that learning penmanship is not a significant skill to learn since the majority of student don’t utilize it. In conclusion, Bennet’s opinion is that being taught cursive is pointless.…
Progressing into the idea that writing is everywhere, Theresa MacPhail, an Assistant Professor at Stevens Institute of Technology established in her article ‘The Importance of Writing Skills…
Lydia is 13 and ½ when she becomes fed up with her soulmate. Everyday she wakes up to to terrible handwriting on the palm on her right hand. It's always a list. She can sometimes make out phrases like “call scott” and “finish math homework”. Perhaps if his handwriting was nicer, she would be less angered. Lydia understands that not everyone took a calligraphy course like herself, but still.…
I can see why some would want children to learn the ways of cursive writting, but the need for curisve is becoming less needed as the years progress. Take your signature for example. Most documents…
After reading the article, “Reading Like a Writer”, it made me aware of my reading behaviors. Just like the text, I read to try to understand what the author is attempting to portray. However, what I am doing differently is only reading for information. What the text suggests that readers do is to ask yourself why the author used that method of writing, whether it's persuasive, ironic, or dramatic. Additionally, the author recommends that you discover who the intended audience is; this will benefit you because it makes you understand why the author used this style of writing.…
Cursive was a benificial skill to have in the passed. However, the continuing advancements in technology and the ability to type quickly has made cursive writing an unnecessary skill. Computers are our future and there for should be a higher focus of education than cursive…
In my opinion, both arguments make valid points. In the excerpt "Cursive Is a Powerful Brain Tool", it states that psychologists found students learned more if they handwrote notes instead of typing them. Although that may be true for some, its a biased argument because we don't know how many people were surveyed to find that out. Not everyone learns the same, so cursive cannot be helpful for everyone. When I was younger I was taught cursive and told that I would be using it for the rest of my life. But here I am now typing an essay on a computer instead of writing it on paper.…
In this article, the researchers used a program called Handwriting without Tears to help two preschool students write. The two preschoolers were a four year old boy and girl. The boy was diagnosed with autism and the girl was diagnosed with developmental delays. The two students were only able to write the letters in their name legibly and struggled with any other letters. This study was given to both students in a self-contained special education classroom. The researches took time to observe both students individually for 15 min during the beginning of the afternoon class period. There were four letters that both of the students focused on during the study the letters were T, H, D, F. There were four different interventions used in this…
I’ve always had the desire to write beautifully, from penmanship to placement and flow of the words. I remember getting birthday cards from my Granny with elegant cursive writing. Attracted to the way each word blended so smooth and soft, I would get a piece of paper and mimic the slants of each word connecting each letter, more like one lowercase “l” after another, to the next. One day I’d be able to spell the words in my mind, and until that day I’d practice my “cursive” one squiggly line at a time.…
How often, on a daily basis, is cursive writing used? This lost art is a mandatory subject in school across the United States of America. Thousands of students every day are being taught a form of writing that is near illegible and will never be used after high school. Many innovators have decided that cursive is outdated and should be eliminated from the curriculum. However, opposing them are the old fashioned men and women who associate sentimentality with cursive. Despite their opinion, cursive writing is on the verge of being completely useless.…
Now many people think we should keep cursive to improve handwriting. But is that really important? It's not important when we constantly use laptops for assignments like essays, like I'm doing right now. So why would it matter what your handwriting looks like if all you'll do is type for the rest of the years of school you have. I have heard teachers say myself that in the next couple of years there will be no more writing in notebooks everything will be on the computer.…
Penmanship is said to be the art of writing. Graphology - the study of handwriting and handwriting analysis - is now an accepted and increasingly used technique for assessment of people in organizations. Handwriting analysis is an effective and reliable indicator of personality and behaviour, and so is a useful tool for many organizational processes, for example: recruitment, interviewing and selection, team-building, counselling, and career-planning.…
Moreover, one of my personal weaknesses is that I have bad handwriting. I usually write with little or no spaces between words and combine cursive and printing together. My school teacher and my parents often complaint that my work looks like that of a child who doesn't understand English or who thinks faster than he can write. Some of my work, the teacher would not mark because she can't read it. To make up for that, I have spent a lot of time working my computer skills so that I can type long essays and other similar assignments. This has helped me to…
