Is Race Still an Issue
Racism is still a world renowned problem in todays society.Racism occurs everywhere, most people assume that racism only deals with color of skin, but it goes way beyond that. Racism is something that we’ve either all experienced or witnessed.
As we grow up, media becomes a factor in our lives and it also is a major source of how racism stays alive in our communities.Throughout the country there has been multiple cases of police brutality towards Colored people & minorities. Many people react with fear toward other individuals who look or come from a different place as them, and whether or not they realize that it is causing discomfort and pain for the person that they …show more content…
are discriminating.
First race is still an issue in america because we’ve all witnessed it happening to someone. In an article from CNN news, published by the CNN staff shows an example of discrimination against African Americans, when 18 year old Michael Brown was shot in front of a convenience store by a Ferguson police officer. Michael Brown was unarmed and had no reason to be harmed."I saw the officer proceeding after my friend,
Big Mike, with his gun drawn, and he fired a second shot, and that struck my friend, Big
Mike," Johnson said. "And at that time, he turned around with his hands up, beginning
to tell the officer that he was unarmed and to tell him to stop shooting. But at that time, the officer was firing several more shots into my friend, and he hit the ground and died."(CNN news staff). In this case the police officer assumed that because Michael
Brown was an African American teenager he had something to do with a armed robbery that had happened earlier in the day. This example shows how people stereotype
African Americans in a negative way. If the American society doesn 't stop stereotyping
African Americans racism will never die in our communities.
Media have played and will continue to play a crucial role in the way Americans perceive AfricanAmericans.
Racism on media has been around for a long time, “Since the 70’s the media has been giving us racial labels, one of the largest supplies coming from crime shows like “Law and Order”, and “CSI”. When dealing with crime, people of color are reflected in the demarcation of “them” and “us”.
Whites are often represented as the “good guy”, or the strong, law abiding citizens. They often target people of color, sometimes without any sort of evidence. Directors and writers use racial stereotypes to make a more complex story with more suspects.” (Lauren May)this is an example of how the media continues to discriminate against AfricanAmericans and perceive them in a negative way, such as gang members, drug dealers, thefts, and criminal suspects.
Racism on media will continue to stay in our world if we dont start changing how the world perceves AfricanAmericans.
Police Departments excessively target minorities and AfricanAmericans as criminal suspects. Racial profiling by police is a big issue in todays society and it seems as if it will always be an issue.”Under a federal court consent decree, traffic stops by the
Maryland State Police on Interstate 95 were monitored. In the two year period from
January 1995 to December 1997, 70 percent of the drivers stopped and searched by the police were black, while only 17.5 percent of overall drivers – as well as overall speeders – were black” (Justice On Trial).
“
The excessive use of force by …show more content…
law enforcement officials against racial and ethnic minorities is an ongoing issue of concern and particularly in light of the shooting of Michael Brown,”(Noureddine Amir).
Those are some examples of how the police racially stereotyped AfricanAmericans and minorities, the police department is supposed to protect and serve, but until the racial profiling stops we will never fully be safe in our communities.
As much as the world has evolved, Racism is still one of the largest issues today, whether you’ve experienced it, witnessed it happen to someone else, heard it in the news, seen it on television, or seen police racially discriminate. There is racism everywhere. How do we expect racism to completly end if all we see and hear about are negative things about African Americans? We are all so consumed in the poor choices some AfricanAmericans make that whether we realize it or not, we all stereotype them, all of them,The color of someones skin does not determine the kind of person they are.
Once racism ends this world will truly be a better place for everyone, everyone deserves to feel as if they were all equal.
