Racism is a highly debated topic in the US. Just one look on the media will show you how people have different opinions on racism and how they react about it. Groups like Black Lives Matter have popped up. This because they believe racism is a growing issue in the US. Others believe it has gone down or is gone completely and people are just overreacting about it. I believe racism is an ongoing issue which is becoming worse because of media, how people grew up, where they grew and what myths they heard during their childhood. Racism spiked from the years 2014 to 2015. A survey named “Public Opinion by Age: Racial Equality in the United States” was taken to see how people viewed racism. In the year 2014, about 51% of them said racism was gone and has been fixed. Those same people took the survey again and 32% of them said racism was gone and had been fixed. That was a change of about 20%! This shows racism has grown during the on-going
presidential run. Using that survey, you can conclude Donald Trump is part of the issue. He is making people more comfortable with racial slurs. He blamed Mexicans and immigrants for making America worse He is a role model to people, so some people follow him. This makes people comfortable with racial slurs. The environment around a person can change their racial ideas. People are not creating racist people.
They are already there because of how their parents guide them on what is wrong and what it right and how they see things. It is just when a person feels like a racial slur is not really racist, they begin to become racist. People have a hard time admitting that they are racist. CNN wrote the article, “Go ahead, admit you're a racist” they talk about how people can not admit they are being racist when they really are racist. When she was backstage, Kelly Osbourne said the following "If you kick every Latino out of this country, then who is going to be cleaning your toilet, Donald Trump?" She later apologized for poor choice of words but she said she won’t apologize for being racist because she is not. As you can see, she made a very racial slur. She just can’t admit it because she looks at racism as a bad image and does not want to show herself as one. People who believe racism is bad still can act racist as seen in this case. This is because they just can see what they said as
racist. Racism affects other things that you may not think about. The following information has been pulled from “Racism in America Today Is Alive and Well — And These Stats Prove It.” Did you know 47% of hate crimes are racially motivated? If there wasn’t any racism, about half of the hate crimes would go down. That is about 117,500+ hate crimes gone. Blacks also earn much less than white people for the same jobs. They just are treated unfairly because of their race. It is about a $10,000 dollar difference. That is a lot of money if you think about it. Lastly, black men are seven more times likely to be shot by the police than white men. If you don’t believe you can watch the daily news and you will see how white police and have been shooting lots black men recently. Racism is a growing issue in America and it needs to be stopped. People need to understand what is racist and what isn’t. They need to understand what is right and what is wrong. All people have been created equal. Treating people equally will give maximum benefits to the entire world. The world can deal with other issues that harder to fix. Black Lives Matter is one step taken to lessen racism. Things like this must be done. Racism grows for multiple reasons like what they were thought, where they live, what race they are and how others react towards it.
