Halloweens. I wanted to be Batman really badly, but I never knew how to become him. What makes these characters different than us? Can I be the next Batman? Science has the answers to some of our childhood questions.
Batman is a character which is distinguished from the others. Some may not consider him as a superhero due to his lack of any super powers. He is considered the best of roughly twenty-two characters that are considered superheroes without having any extraordinary powers (harleyquinnhawkgirl, 2014). Some may say that Batman isn’t a superhero because he doesn’t have superpowers like laser eyes, such as Superman, nor the ability to control plant life, like the Poison Ivy. Now people may ask, what makes him a superhero if he does not have any powers? Batman has, unlike the other major superheroes, has powers that he acquired through hard work, training, and monetary wealth. Batman is definitely a hero, but it depends on your opinion of what makes a superhero what they are. He is extremely strong and very smart, smarter than the average man. He's experience with technology much beyond the learnings of the average human, he is the world's greatest detective, and he is also the world's greatest martial artist (DC Comics, 2014).
Batman’s origins are very unique: born Bruce Wayne, his father was a very wealthy philanthropist named Thomas Wayne. After coming back from the movies with his parents Thomas and Martha Wayne, they walked into Crime Alley, where a criminal named Joe Chill came up to them with a gun in his hand. He wanted to take the necklace that Bruce’s mother was wearing. Thomas Wayne would not allowed for that to happen, so he got in front of her to protect her. Joe Chill reacted by shooting Thomas and then Martha, after she was screaming in response to Thomas’ death. While shooting Martha, Joe Chill screamed “This will shut you up” (Smallville, 2014). The entirety of both murders occurred in front of the eight-year-old Bruce Wayne. After that night, Brace was never the same. Following death of his parents, Bruce lived with his butler Alfred Pennyworth. Alfred raised him and helped him become Batman. Since Bruce was an only child, his parents’ deaths allowed him to inherit his family's fortune. Bruce also inherited his father’s company, Wayne Enterprises. Bruce made a promise to his parents, while standing in front of their tombstones that their deaths will not be in vain (DC Comics, 2014).
The costume is very important in a character’s image and popularity. Personally, the characters’ costume is the most important thing. Batman’s unique outfit is one of the more basic ones but still much different than the others. In most of his appearances, Batman is found wearing a dark black suit. The suit in which is made out of Kevlar. Kevlar is a polymer that was discovered in 1964 by DuPont on accident. It is very strong and can protect you from bullets. However, it won’t save you from sharp objects that can puncture you. A disadvantage of Kevlar is that it becomes weaker as the temperature becomes higher. Crimes usually occur at night so it would be great for Batman because the temperatures are usually cooler during that time.
Spiderman may be able to stick on to walls and Wolverine may have the power to pull out claws but nothing can compare to Batman’s gadgets. Batman has been in society for a long time and every time a new movie or comic came out, Batman had the new technology. The ones every one wished they had but did not. Since Batman doesn’t have any powers, he uses his technology a lot to get through the crimes. It is an advantage for him because whenever he needs his gadgets to defeat someone, he has them on his belt. Batman’s gadgets have changed through his existents. He has a grappling gun, which allows him to fend off down buildings. This was one of his more popular and basic gadgets. He also had the Batarang, which he uses to knock people off their feet. If you ever watch Batman, you should know about the Bat Mobile. Even if you haven’t watch Batman before, Bat Mobile has been one of, if not the most popular part of Batman’s legacy. The Bat Signal is one of the coolest gadgets he has. Even know it’s not on his belt, the Bat Signal is used by the commissioner to call Batman for help, in order to fight crime. Bat Pod is also an automotive gadget he has. The Bat Pod is basically a motorcycle for Batman. Most of these gadgets are used in the most recent Batman appearances (The Dark Knight Rises, Batman Begins)
Martial Arts is also a big part of Batman’s legacy.
He doesn’t have superpowers so he has to train and train to stay in the best possible shape in order to beat crimes. His intelligent has helped him understand martial arts quick but also his hard training has helped him become of the best. Ted Grant, who was a trainer, taught Bruce at a young age on how to take a hit and the basic training of Martial Arts. Most of his trainers are unknown but he was taught how to kick, how to anticipate his opponents attacks which could come easy for him because of how smart he is. At one point in his life, Bruce learned from a female trainer how to fight for a long time. She put him in a gauntlet match that came with death rules in other words, if you want to win, kill (BatmanFeats, 2014). All of the training that he took part of has helped him become strong. Through his trainings, he learned how to be discipline when fighting and know how to
fight. Bruce Wayne was a wealthy individual. He is worth about 6.8 billion dollars. His parents’ death gave him all of the fortune and has helped him become the man he is today. Batman is one of the wealthiest super characters. He used his fortune to become one of the best fighter ever. His Kevlar suit is extremely expensive to create and he lived in a huge mansion that only him and his butler, Alfred lives in. His father’s enterprise that he took inheritance of, Wayne Enterprise had a lot of value. Being that rich helped Bruce travel the world and train. He used his wealth to buy all the technology he needed to fight crime.
As we can see Batman used what he had to become one of the best superheroes. Even though Batman had a difficult childhood with the death of his parents, he kept his promise to not let their deaths be in vain. Although he lacked in superpowers, he used what he was given and learned to become a successful crime fighter. His intelligence helped him use complex polymers to keep himself safe during his battles. Being technologically savvy has helped Batman conquer enemies that may have more superpowers than him. The grappling gun, Batarang, Bat Mobile, and the Bat Pod were his signature gadgets which helped him in many fights. The Bat Signal was used by the city but was extremely important to Batman’s deployment when the city needed him. His training and dedication to keep his parents’ deaths from being in vain has led him to become the most popular superhero in comic books, movies, and/or a television series since his arrival.
