Is Technology Killing Our Friendship
The saddest day of my life arrives, and it is the day that I am moving. I am moving away from my best friend, and I am extremely heartbroken considering that I've known her for all thirteen years of my life. However, I am not as blue as I would have been if I didn't have a phone. At least we can still text, send pictures, and connect easily with our phones, even though we are more than 2,000 miles apart. Likewise, this is a scenario that occurs often in current lives.Technology is commonly used throughout the world. However, some think that it is overused and may be hindering relationships with people. They are saying that technology is affecting our interactions. I feel that it is the opposite. The article, Is Technology Killing Our Friendships? By Lauren Tarshis, and Is Technology Making People Less Sociable? By Dr. Hampton, is debating the question of whether or not technology is damaging relationships. Although some may say that technology is killing relationships, I believe that it is not because it makes friendships stronger, you can encourage or motivate people, and you can stay in touch easily. …show more content…
Technology can help us become closer to friends in so many different ways. We can become better friends with people that we haven't been to close with, and become even closer with our good friends. For example an article reads, "Online communication can make friendships stronger" (Tarshish 2). This shows that with technology, connecting online can build relationships. Also, technology is not ruining our friendships because another article states, “...At the same time take advantage of technology to make our closest relationships even closer” (Dr. Hampton 2). This can tell us that even the close relationships that we have can become stronger and closer with the help of technology. Technology does not kill relationships, but makes them even

This quote relates to it, as it says, “In the past people used technology as a tool for making survival an easier endeavor. Nowadays we are witnessing a shift in the role technology is playing in our society and may continue to play for generations to come. In the modern-day world technology is no longer a tool for survival but it turned to a means of communication and entertainment. Mass communication technology has made it easier than ever to connect with people. At the same time this raises the concern of whether technology has a good or bad influence on our society, is the use of technology destroying face-to-face interaction and communication between people?”. Technology is used a lot more than necessary and time is going by a lot faster because of all the time spent on…

Technology is hurting people intellectually and socially. Technology influences people to be more isolated because people can now just communicate over social media instead of actually talking face to face. People are beginning to become too dependent on technology. For example, technology is used for maps, socialization, shopping, and even books. People are becoming so attached to technology because they can do literally anything with it. In the novel Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury, Montag’s wife, Mildred became so attached to her television set and her “family” that she completely lost her love for her husband. The empty void in her heart is filled with her television and radio. When Montag is describing how technology has made him isolated, he states, “I cannot talk to my wife. She listens to the walls” (Bradbury 78). Mildred became so dependent and attached to her tv that it is the only thing she cares about, even more than her husband. She became so connected with her tv’s and radios that she does not even listen to her husband when he is talking to her. Technology completely took over her life to the point where she became intensely isolated, much like what is happening to people…

“We have too many cell phones. We’ve got too many internets. We have got to get rid of those machines.” Ray Bradbury was a man of science, but also of writing. Which is why it puzzles me that he thinks technology is going to decrease social interaction among humans, I think he was wrong. In Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury, he shows us how technology and censorship can ruin a society. I agree with him to a point, but we also differ in opinions. Although he predicted our future fairly correctly, I think he got this part wrong. With modern day technology we are closer than ever, we are connected 24/7 and can always get in touch. Technology gives us the ability to stay connected at all times, save lives, and educate new generations more completely. From any aspect you can clearly see that social interaction…

Some people might say that technology is a definite positive development with only positive changes. However, although the technological advance have been and is extremely helpful to everyone around the world, people need to think about how people can be too consumed in the technology that they can isolate themselves from the outside world even. Having fun with technology is normal, but we must not forget how to really communicate without the use of texting or email. Communicating face-to-face should be a key skill humans should never lose. The saying, “having too much of a good thing, can be bad,”…

In “How Technology Makes Us better Social Beings” Megan Gambino (2011) believes that although there are some research shows technology is harmful to people’s public relationship, there are more studies prove that technology can build more relationship for people. The author lists many different researches about both negative and positive effects of technology. Gambino is trying to let the reader believe the technologies have benefits to human’s social relationship. I have doubt on both side of Gambino’s opinion.…

Technology is the reason for us not communicating with each other as much as we should be. It's important to communicate in a way where we understand each other very clearly. When using our devices, we are stuck in our own little worlds unless we choose not to. But many prefer being alone rather than talking with friends or family and communicating. Lack of content between us is changing many people. They are less likely to share any problems going on in their lives. Due to isolation, many kids, or anyone in general, may have the need to feel isolated as well and won't fit in with others. This leads to depressiom and many other things that ca be worse. Many of us today are highly uneducated. We rely on technology to give us many answers instead of learning the proper way, like we should have. We have all seen or experienced several changes of behavior due to technology in our society. This change isn't exactly a positive change, though. This leads to poor living habits. For example, lack of social skills. We lose the ability to read body language and understand things. But, many are becoming more violent due to the media. One thing we don't want in this world is more violence.…

With technology on the rise, everything can be done in one click from the palms of our hands. Can you believe that we can make new friends by the click of a button? In the article, ‘Are you over-connected’, Tom Chatfield states that the ability of our phones to connect with people over long distances has caused a tremendous effect on our daily lives. We ignore the environment around us, not observing its unique properties and the danger it can bring, simply because the constant use of our phone tends to be more entertaining. Our heads are consistently at the same angle no matter where we are, at the bus station, supermarket or even in our workplace, being connected to our phones in order to gain access to our friends, family and many other entertaining resources. I strongly agree, and stand “shoulder-to-shoulder” with Mr Chatfield in his argument as he illustrates and points out that the overuse of technology will throw our lives down the…

It acts as a barrier between family members. This is also demonstrated in modern times due to electronic devices. People waste their time in front of the screens, most of the time. Looking at African veldt and scenery, David McClean explains, “You’ve let this room and this house replace you and your wife in your children’s affections” (Bradbury 111). I even catch myself turning to technology rather than engaging with my family, because it requires less effort. However, this is so harmful to my family and me, as well as the rest of society, because it will eliminate face-to-face communication and reduce it to online conversations. Although this means of communication appears to be more efficient, it weakens the bond that bind people together by crippling their social skills. The truth is that technology debilitates the transfer of real emotions and expressions that can only be achieved through physical interaction, resulting in the decline of human capabilities.…

Have advances in technology caused us as human beings to be less social? While technology has definitely helped make life simpler it has also caused us to become more distant from the rest of society. Before the convenience of the internet you were, for the most part, forced to interact with other people. Now with just the click of a button you never have to leave the comfort of your own home. You can purchase things and have them delivered right to your door never having to step foot into a store and interacting with anyone. You can stream movies over the internet, play video games all sitting in the same room. People become more involved in cyberspace and become less involved with the people that occupy the space right next to them. Some may argue that interaction with other people over the internet is considered being social. The lack of visual body language and human contact definitely creates a rift in the social nature of interaction.…

Technology can help you keep close friendships with friends who move away or with relatives who do not live near you. "You can watch your baby cousin grow up via Instagram and stay- up-to-date on hundreds of people at once" ("Is Technology Killing Our Friendships?"). You can share daily experiences with photos on social media sites like Instagram or Snapchat, unlike with the time lag of writing letters and mailing them. Facetime is a good way to connect with people if you aren't able to see them face-to-face. Additionally, with heavy homework loads and busy extracurricular activity schedules, teens don't have time to physically be with their friends. Furthermore, in most families, both parents work and aren't available to transport their kids to friends' houses. "These platforms help people stay connected like never before" ("Is Technology Killing Our Friendships?"). Through digital communication, teens can still check in with their friends electronically, while having busy schedules. Communicating on electronic devices allows you to engage with friends and family in real time at anytime.…

In the past, you had to send a letter in the mail you travel to see them to communicate with someone; if you wanted to talk to someone, you would have to put the effort into it and take the time to write them and wait for a response back. Then with technology advancing, the telephone was made and you could call someone to talk to them instead of writing a letter and waiting for the person to respond. Technology kept advancing, and now in today’s society, we hardly talk on the phone; we text instead, which is quick, easy, and effortless. This is what technology has done to human beings as a whole. It has brought wonderful advancements, yet at the same time, technology has been a curse and changed the way we view each other. No one really communicates with each other now; only through texting do we talk.…
