Newton’s father, who was also named Isaac Newton, died around three months before Newton was born. Newton was also born prematurely and wasn't expected to live for very long. Newton’s family problems didn’t stop there. When he was three, his mother remarried and left Newton with his grandmother so she could start a new family. At age twelve, Newton was reunited with his mother. His mother pulled him out of school so he could help on the family farm. Newton was never too fond of this as he prefered reading to working. When he was nineteen, Newton’s uncle persuaded his mother to let him go the University of Cambridge. During his time, Newton also had to be wary of the plague. The great plague of 1665-1666 was the last outbreak of the bubonic plague to exist in England. The plague caused the University to close for about two years during which Newton began his study on gravitation and optics. This shows that Newton didn’t have the ideal childhood for someone who was born into a farm family and would turn into a genius of his time. It also shows that he did not give up even when it seemed really tough and unlikely that he would be able to make a …show more content…
The Principia includes Newton's laws of motion, ideas of classical mechanics, Newton's universal law of gravitation, and a derivation of Kepler's laws of planetary motion. Some even consider Newton’s Principia to be "justly regarded as one of the most important works in the history of science”. Newton’s universal law of gravitation and his work on orbits was required for the first moon landing. Without his work on those, we may have not made it to the moon yet. These same laws also allowed Einstein to develop his theories of General Relativity and of Special Relativity. Newton had published the Principia in 1687. One year after his competitor, Robert Hooke died, Newton published his second major work, Opticks in 1704. In Opticks, Newton describes how light can be refracted and diffracted by use of lenses and prisms. Earlier in Newton's life before he wrote Opticks, he used his knowledge to create the first known reflecting telescope to ever exist. This had a large impact on the world and on people today. We see Newton as a hero today because of these inventions like the reflecting telescope, which is very important in the world of astronomy. People want to follow in his tracks and be like Newton. Those people are the people who think of him as a hero. Newton in a sense created branches of mathematics and science that today is the world for
