Linda Lee’s essay, “The Case against College” is making the argument that college is not necessary to succeed and it is not for everyone. She uses her experience with her son as an example and also includes some statistics, such as how many Americans have bachelor’s degrees or higher. Though it provides some interesting ideas to explore, the success stories are not fully explained and her son’s story does not apply to everyone. Also, there are other arguments for college that are not addressed in the essay such as requirements for certain careers, sense of accomplishment, experience gained when a student is even partially engaged, etc. Lastly, some of her arguments can be disputed. Just as college graduates may have supplemented their experience,…

I felt that the article was very much true to life. I agree that marriage seems to last a lifetime for the more educated and wealthy. I see all too often young adults getting married just because they have become pregnant or for the wrong reasons. This theory rarely seems to work. This usually causes problems for the young family because neither person is ready to take on the major responsibility that having a family at such a young age brings. This relates very close to my life because I was married and had my first child at the age of 16. With the lack of education and work experience that I had, it made it almost impossible to support and provide for my child. Needless to say, I found myself divorced and a 16 year old single parent six months later.…
Where this agreement usually ends, however, is on the question of is college beneficial or not. Whereas some are convinced that going to college is beneficial, others maintain that going to college isn’t beneficial at all. “College dropouts face higher unemployment, have lower median incomes, and have higher loan default rates than those who graduate.” In making this comment, Jennifer Wheary the one who published this information believes that those who don’t get an education after their twelfth grade face a lot of problems. My own view, however, it is that college is beneficial because those who go to universities have more opportunities in getting hired. However, it is simply not true that college is a waste of time and money. On the other hand obtaining an education after your senior high benefits you in so many ways. For example by obtaining your bachelor's degree you can can open your own…
The case against college When it comes to the idea of going to college, the thoughts are infinite. For the most part people know that going to college will benefit their future, however, a commonly debated question: Is going to college worth all of the time and money? For some, college planning may have begun in their early years, but what about those who don't wish to attend college to become successful in life? Some people, such as the author of “The case against college,” Linda Lee, portrays to believe that not everybody needs to obtain a college degree.…
Today, more people than ever are going to college, yet the nation’s overall college graduation rate has remained low. Only 59 percent of students who began as freshmen at a four year college in fall of 2006 receive their diplomas within six years. Some college students have to quit college even if they have enough skill to graduation because of their family issue. College students who come from low-income background, they are less likely to begin college, less likely to finish, and not that much chance of college success. Now more adults are choosing to return to college while raising children because children spouses and the College Board parents all feel the effects of that decision. Some adults are choosing their family and think that their family…
Today, the practice of opting out of marriage is common. In 2009, at least 40 percent of unmarried couples have children, which is an 138 percent increase since the 1900's. With the rapid acceptance of couples disregarding marriage while having children, the ceremony of marriage is becoming more and more obsolete. Since more children are having parents that are unmarried, Doe's argument of the child's well-being of having a "legitimate" mother and father is becoming irrelevant. Many of children in schools are having the same fate as the author's grandson, thus becoming a social norm. Regardless, many children will still consider their parents as their mother and father whether or not the parents are…
The opposite may also be true for lower class families. It is most likely that children from lower class families will not learn the appropriate cultural capital required to move from the lower class to the upper class.…
"In addition to this, sometimes lack of education can play a major problem in this. Also, lack of skills can become a problem. Physical and mental disabilities are common among the lower class," (Shepard, 2013, p. 217). Single mother, or single parents in general comes into category, because there is little to none income. There are many routes into the lower-class birth, old age, alcoholism, and loss of marriage partner.…
One of the most precious moments in a parent’s life is the birth of their child. From the moment the child is born, ensuring that they have what they need to be successful in life is a key consideration for the parents. Educating a child is one of the biggest financial investments that a parent can make in a child. Most parents start a college fund as soon as they are born. A bachelors degree graduate earns around $40.478 per year as opposed to just $22, 895 for a high school graduate according to U.S. census bureau. But a child born in 1990’s have greater challenges since tuition has risen around 340% from this date. Many students unable to afford college are forced to take high interest loans for colleges leaving them financially stressed for a good portion of their working lives.…
In the United States, getting a college degree or other post-high school education is almost a necessity for getting high skill and high pay employment. We know that education is key to breaking the poverty cycle, but without the support of a family which values education, it is extremely difficult to achieve success throughout the early years of school, get into college and pay for…
I come from a family where both parents are with a college degree. My parents strongly believe that education is a value for future success. They had me observe how they both had to work, but they have always managed a litter easier in their lives because they both have university education. Now I realize what is the value of university education and its meaning to the whole family. Just watching the news and seeing these families who are less fortunate to go attend university makes me appreciate the chance my parent give me. These are just some of the many values my parents preach to me over the years.…
In the United States there are 25 million children without their father (Horn). These are some sad statistics. It is important for families to spend as much time as they can to their children and the best way for that to happen is that you need to be married that is Horn’s belief. Then there are people like Edin and Kefalas who bring out human element to single parents. When you bring more of a human element to a reader you tend to have more people towards your side. They may not have had all statistics for this argument but, the ethos and pathos were well written. The America we live in today has single parents 1 in 3.…
Every individual enters adulthood at his or her own pace and at different ages. One key of the five defining moments of adulthood happens to be parenthood. In the past entering parenthood upon entering adulthood was seen as normal. Women would stay home to care for children and men provided financially for families. Nowadays, many individuals are delaying parenthood opting instead to further education, pursue a career, purchase a home or automobile, and taking more time to become better acquainted with a potential spouse. Some people believe cohabiting prior to marriage will improve his or her chances of a successful marriage. Women in today’s society are becoming further educated and establishing careers before entering parenthood. Thus, these women choose to juggle careers and parenthood unlike women in the early 1900s (University of Phoenix, 2002). By postponing parenthood many young adults have the opportunity to transition into adulthood as better adjusted individuals. Individuals who enter adulthood…
In the last couple of years the divorce rate is very high in America and many students are brought up in single parent families. “ The traditional family – a husband who is the primary breadwinner, a mother who doesn’t work outside the home, and two school…
