In life, everyone experiences things they would’ve never pictured themselves doing so. In a long way gone Ishmael was living his life without any surprises even though he heard stories about the refugees passing by he couldn’t begin to imagine what they had been through. Little did he know he would also be part of the war, first running away from the rebels to becoming a soldier and fighting against them relentlessly. The world he once knew was gone. Ishmael was put into the world where killing was accepted because seeking revenge was okay. After fighting for 2 years Ishmael was chosen by his lieutenant to go with the UNICEF along with other boys around his age to get a second chance at life. They would be put into school and get an education as well as a place to eat, sleep and live. A life where he didn’t have to worry about fighting everyday for survival and food. It wasn’t going to be easy, Ishmael said: “It hadn’t crossed their minds that a change in environment wouldn’t immediately make us normal boys; we were dangerous, and brainwashed to kill” (p.135). This Shows he was taken from the world where his lifestyle was typical nothing out of the ordinary just living life like every other day to a life where killing, raping and torture was seen as normal. Now he is trying to ease back into normality where there are no random killings or attacks a place he can call home and feel comfortable in. Of Course, it’s not going to be easy because what he went through will always be a part of
