Islam – A Diverse Religion in a Diverse World

The ill view of the Islamic faith remains years after 9/11. A more comprehensive

knowledge of their faith and its good attributes will help in our perceptions and how we treat

members of this religious order. There are certain factions of the Islamic faith that are terrorists,

this has been proven in more than one instance. These are the radicals of the faith. There are

many more Muslims that are good people who have no intention of hurting anyone. There has

been a backlash against Muslims for several years in many countries including the United

States. The bombing of the World Trade Center clearly brought the world’s disharmony to the

attention of the average American citizen. This has made it very difficult for people of the

Muslim faith to carry on regular day-to-day interactions and dealings with people that are not of

their faith.

We will explore the Muslim population in the United States, Great Britain, Pakistan, the

Middle East, India and other Asian countries. We will explore the number of Muslims in these

countries, how Islam is perceived in these countries and how the Muslim population interacts

with Jews, Christians and other religions in that country.

The distribution of the Muslim population in the world. It is thought, by the general population in the United States, that the majority of the

Muslim world population is located in the Middle East. The fact is, that of the target areas this

paper is exploring, only four countries fall into the top ten populations of Muslims. Only three,

Iran, Afghanistan and Yemen are in the top ten as a percentage of the total population.

The top ten nations with a large Muslim population are Indonesia in Asia with

213,469,356 Muslims, Pakistan in the Middle East with 156,491,617 Muslims, India in Asia with

“All men are created equal and are endowed by their creator the unalienable rights of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness”. In these United States of America, men and women should not be judged by the religion they practice but by the content of their character. All over the country, there has been exceptional protest against the building of the mosque. Andrea Peyser writes, “There are many questions about the mosque. But just one answer: move it away,” (Peyser). Ever since the tragedy of 9/11, nearly all Americans have gained the understanding that Muslims are harmful to the United States; however, Americans have failed to draw the distinction between Islamic extremists that caused this terrorist attack and simple followers of Islam.…
