ISM stands for international solidarity movement. ISM is an organization that is focused on assisting Palestinians in the Israeli- Palestinians conflict, this conflict began in 1948 between the Jews and Arabs after the Holocaust, fighting for the territory in Gaza. Many attempts have been made to make a two state solution between the lands but no agreements have been made thus far.
ISM was founded in 2001 by Ghassan Andoni, Neta Golan, Huwaida Arraf and George Rishmawi, together they fight to protect the rights and lives of the Palestinians on the West Bank. The Palestinians are mistreated by Israeli soldiers and are often shot dead. In an article on BBC.com, it was said that most recently in July 2014 “Authorities said over 2,200 people were killed - most of them Palestinians - and many more injured, during 50 days of violence.” (BBC.com) ISM is trying to get civilians from all around the world to participate in non-violent acts against the Israel military in West Bank for the mistreatment of the Palestinians.
Neta Golan is an activist, part of the ISM. Golan a co- founder of ISM is a third generation Israeli. She was born and raised in Tel-Aviv (a city in Israel). Golan attended Jewish schools where she was taught about Jewish history and religion daily, almost as much as she was taught academics. In school she was taught about the strict Israeli agenda, the Israelis were the victims and the Palestinians were violent and the “bad guys”. Golan stated, “I learned always that we were defending ourselves from people who wanted to kill us.” (Developyourpresence.com) Children in Israel were taught to hate their neighbors. It wasn’t until later years, that she learned the true occupation of the Israeli’s.
