Isolation In Andrew Wyeth's Wind From The Sea

Isolation has a poor connotation attached to it because numerous people fear being alone. Society reinforces that notion by declaring that to be happy we need to be married, have kids, own a house and be social. Andrew Wyeth’s painting Wind from the Sea fights this common belief by portraying the beauty and simplicity of a remote location. In the painting, the curtain is being blown by the wind and beyond the window the only commodity you can see is the sky, the bit of snow that has not yet melted and the forest that surrounds the plain around the house. This secluded setting gives off the feeling of calm and peace that is so uncommon in urban cities due to all the noise and chaos. Most times we portray ourselves how we think society expects us to be, while the truth is that when our days are coming to an end, we subconsciously do things that would relax us in order to get away from everything that stresses and weights us down. Even the title suggests that there are times when we have to let go of our worries and be ourselves. In a way this painting reminds me of the story, “Into Silence” by Marlin Barton.
It is like a breath of fresh air that rehabilitates you. The environment beyond the window in Wyeth’ s painting conjures a stress free radiance. Consequently, Mary Whyte’s painting “Sweetpea,” shows a young girl holding a doll behind what appears to be a vibrant quilt. However, it is not the colors which grab our attention, but the relaxed expression on the girls face, which is so similar to the feeling Wyeth’s painting gives off. Some would say that being in any situation or location so conflict free and calming is a gift due to how rarely people actually manage to get away from their everyday
