Israel Day Parade annually honored New York City’s Jewish community with paintings, decorated floats and other celebrations of blue and white along the parade route. Struck by the utter and obvious joy exhibited by the participants in the parade incessantly with smiles, ear-to-ear and after its conclusion, many on the side street at the end of the route were singing and dancing. As crowds turn out for Israel Day Parade, New York becomes a melting pot throughout the day. Israel Day Parade took center stage along the much trodden, tree-lined route that borders Central Park. More than one million New York Yorkers attended Sunday’s festivities to show support for Israel and to celebrate the 65th anniversary of the Jewish state’s founding. More than 30,000 marchers and 17 bands, many from schools known by their acronyms, such as HAFTR (Hebrew Academy of Five Towns and Rockaway) and HANC (Hebrew Academy of Nassau County) walked with New York mayor Michael Bloomberg, governor Andrew Cuomo and the city’s executive officials.
