Emily felt so depressed that, “After her father's death she went out very little; after her sweetheart went away, people hardly saw her at all.”(Faulkner). Emily isolates herself from the community completely once her father dies and does not leave her house. However, once she finally leaves her house she meets a young man from the North whose name is Homer Barron. This is Emily’s first chance to meet somebody without her overprotective father pushing them away. Emily begins to fall in love Homer and forgets about all the grief that her father’s death brought her. This is short feeling however, because Homer tells Emily that he is leaving town soon. She once again goes back into depression and decides to take matters into her own hands. Shortly after finding out about Homer’s plans, Emily decides to go buy arsenic. This is another extraordinary example of Emily receiving her father’s obsessive traits from him. Her mindset is that if she can not have Homer, then no body can. Arsenic is a type of posing which is being put to use by posing Homer inside her home. Due to Emily’s coping skills, she could not handle the fact that she is going to lose another person she loves.
