It is not cruel to keep an animal in a cage. A cage is an enclosure used to confine or protect something. Some people say that caging the animals is unethical as it deprives them of their freedom. However, there are other reasons, such as preserving the species to ensure it does not go into extinction, giving people a chance to explore wildlife that is impossible to find in a city and protecting the human population from any threats caused by dangerous animals. These reasons outweigh that the animal has lost some freedom.
Keeping an animal in captivity can be used to protect the animal from extinction. In the wild there are many dangers that could affect the population of animal species, mainly poachers and deforestation. Breeding these animals in a safe environment increases the population until it is big enough to be released back into the wild. For example the population of the giant panda was rapidly decreasing from deforestation. Breeding programs were established and now the population of giant pandas is stabilising. In this way, keeping an animal in a cage is helping the survival of the species.
Keeping an animal in a zoo inclosure is not cruel because it allows normal people to learn about these creatures. Even though these animals are in a smaller space than the wild they have an improved standard of living. They have guaranteed shelter, food and even medical check-ups! Singapore Zoo entertains visitors with animal shows which also carry an educational message. These make sure that people are more cautious of their actions in the future. Zoos educate visitors not only about the animal itself but also about how to protect its survival. Is it cruel that the animals in the enclosures are fed every day?
